Writing Update! (A Big One)

So I have lost count of how many times I have been asked, "Are you really trying to do an epic fantasy series for your first work?"

This is usually accompanied by an, "OOKKKIIIEEE" when I say yes.

Over the last week though it set in why people are asking that and the issues lined up exactly with what I am experiencing. I am not skilled enough YET to put years of my life into a fantasy epic and be truly proud of the final result. The return on effort is incredibly low for someone as new to writing as I am.

So what is the solution? I have a fantasy world I am obsessed with building and a story I want to tell. I can't forget about that. Even the planned prequel, if bad, will soil the rest of the series if it is mediocre. I need to adjust the manageable chunks to improve my craft while not damaging the final work I am striving for.

The solution? COLLECTION OF SHORT STORIES TAKING PLACE IN THE WORLD OVER VARIOUS TIMES!

I can hear you now, "Daniel, did you really just move the goal post for yourself again?"

You're damn right I did! This is going to be a series I am judged on forever and rushing it to satisfy an imaginary deadline I don't even have yet would be dumb, AND this is good news for you. "Why?", you ask with your nose in the air and a stain on your shirt. BECAUSE YOU GET SHORT STORIES YOU BELLIGERENT BADGERS!

Before, you were maybe going to get chapters here and there. That would be dumb and spoil the main story. Now you get completed stories and watch me get better/judge the shit out of me. I look forward to it. Do you?

Best,
A fellow Belligerent Badger

This is so awesome! I am currently doing the exact same thing! I just started becoming more serious about writing as well. And even started my own Patreon account to motivate myself. And guess what? I was totally inspired by you! I'm excited to watch you grow into your craft, that you're obviously so passionate about. If you want to you can check out my page as well. There's a small sample. Keep up the good work!

I think this will be great. It will let you get o know your world better and try things out without crushing your dream story!

I meant to write one long comment and have spaces between sections, but keep forgetting you can't do that on mobile. Anyway, YOU BELLIGERENT BADGERS in all caps is the best thing I've read this week 😂

Understanding? It doesn't quite convey the depth I want it to 🤔 Anyway, good on ya, work on your craft. As a fellow perfectionist I feel your struggle between getting your vision on paper and making it as perfect as it can be 😅

Inka Reunanen

Probably a good idea, tbh. Looking forward to anything you write, mostly because of your sense of humour but also because of your understandment of the genre 👌 (Is that an actual word? English is not my first language, sorry 😂)

I've noticed you mention that you'd like to redo some of your old videos or how much you've improved your videos over time, so this short story strategy seems sound to develop your writing craft similar to how you've developed into my favorite youtube channel. Looking forward to more short stories

My shirt has no stain! How dare you presume such a thing?

I personally would probably do the same thing. Just as a counter point though I know Brandon Sanderson said in one of his videos not to do this. If you plan on writing novels start with novels. If you plan on writing short stories write short stories. That they are different art forms all together and being good at one does not make you good at the other. I completely understand the thought process though and likely would ignore this advice myself.

Justin

It's a good pivot.

It’s your work! Do whatever you want, however you want, whenever you want. Have fun with it!
