Quarterback Episode 3 (Kings of Pain)

Another episode of this incredible series, probably gave us our biggest insight yet! Ahead of a game with a defensive powerhouse, Patrick Mahomes reveals his strategy for not getting hit too hard; the Minnesota Vikings face a tall Order against the Buffalo Bills.

The Montana name is from the movie “The Waterboy” one of the characters mistakenly said “he’s the best tackler since Joe Montanya”

34:25 "Why do you think he gets hit so much? Is the line not protecting him enough or does he take a long time to make a decision?" The answer is yes lol. I would argue both. The line was not great. However I, as a Vikings fan and someone who thinks Kirk is a great dude and super tough, think he holds on to the ball way too long a lot of the time.

There's also an actor Joe Mantegna, pronounced like in the video. He had his heyday around the same time I remember seeing them get mixed up way back when.

I'm with you Damo BAC. Save all of that intense training for the off season. But what a great episode. This game is brutal on the body and you have to develop the fortitude to play through pain. Some of these defensive linemen are twice the size and 3 times the muscle of these QB's and they are hitting these QB's as hard as legally possible without incurring a penalty. None of these QB's are real big guys either, though Mariota seems quite tall. A very good series. Glad you guys added it to Patreon. ♣

No, the joke here (and in Waterboy) is that Joe Mantegna is a different guy. He’s best known for being in Criminal Minds and The Simpsons: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Mantegna

41:19 actually, the Head Coach was telling Cousins that he wanted to call their last Timeout there (typically in a situation like that, coaches will send out a formation to the offense to line up in but do NOT snap the ball as the Coach and Offensive Coordinator want to see how the Defense will line up, then call time out, reassess their options and then run a real play). But Kirk called for the QB Sneak, with the intent to actually run the play. Then the coach disappointed Kirk ran a play, told him he still could've salvaged the decision by "going over the top" which of course Kirk also didn't do

37:51 The Ball was on the Vikings 27 Yard Line whit would've made the useless kick an 86 Yard Field Goal Attempt 🤣

We know this, Damo has a slip of the tongue now and then, it’s an easy mistake after following soccer for 30 years, give us some margin for error 😂

34:55 A "Linesman" is what you lot have that run up and down the "Touch Line" with a flag. A "LINEMAN" is a player in American Football that line up in the "Tackle Box" right along the LOS (Line Of Scrimmage)

JT Rebel

34:25 There 2 aspects of a pass play that lead to a QB being under pressure. 1) The "Pass Rush" being generated by the Defense is not giving the QB enough time for the "Receiver Routes" to develop 2) The "Pass Coverage" that the Defense has called for that specific play is not giving the QB any viable options to throw to without potentially throwing an Interception forcing the QB to hold on to the Football a lot longer than he would like The combination of the 2 should always be considered for an Defensive Sack or QB Hit or Interception or Pass Deflection (btw I've heard you guys call a "Pass Deflection" an "Interception"- Interception are any play were a Defensive Player CATCHES a QB's Pass...A "Pass Deflection" is any pass that was touched by a Defensive Player but did NOT result in a CATCH by either team)

26:42 The Super Bowl is only 57 years old and only the Detroit Lions (93 years old), Cleveland Browns (79 years old), Jacksonville Jaguars (29 years old), Houston Texans (23 years old) have not played in a Super Bowl. The Franchises who have played in a Super Bowl without a Super Bowl win are: Buffalo Bills (63 years old), Minnesota Vikings (62 years old), Cincinnati Bengals (55 years old), Atlanta Falcons (57 years old), Carolina Panthers (28 years old), Los Angeles Chargers (63 years old), Arizona Cardinals (125 years old), Tennessee Titans (63 years old)

I saw it, they were ex teammates. I was just commenting on the mutual respect a lot of them have for each other. It’s good to see. It makes sense that this conversation was longer and a lot more personal 😊

Damon Richmond

at 25:34 you missed an important context (the graphic onscreen under Conklin's name) to why Mariota and Conklin were talking a lot more as opposed to Mahomes and Bosa

JT Rebel

Cousins gets hit more because he had an awful offensive line compared to the rest of the league. An offensive line can make or break a Quarterback. A good one will make you look better, give you more time etc. A bad one could ruin your career (Andrew Luck took so many hits and piled up injuries he retired early despite being seen as a “generational” talent), and also lower the amount of time you have to 1. Find who is open and 2. Allow time for receivers to actually get open. Joe Burrow was another example of a guy who had no offensive line in his first year which led to him missing the year with a torn ACL unfortunately.

Hunter

It's pronounced like the state, Joe Montana. The southern twangy version is a classic line from Waterboy that everyone is referencing

Good watch, big dawgs

I like that you guys seem to be respecting the players and the game now for the talent, effort, strategy and commitment it requires and not just the entertainment value. I really appreciate that you both seem genuinely interested in learning about football.

The Vikings and Bills have lost every Super Bowl that they have made it too. Both of them are 0-4 in the Super Bowl. In the early 90s the Bills made it there 4 years in a row and lost every time to an NFC East team. Never thought I would hear the name Santana Moss again. I remember sitting in the end zone where he caught a game winning touchdown pass to beat Virginia Tech when he was in college playing for the Miami Hurricanes.

JForte

You guys are gonna watch the Swamp Kings series on Netflix, right? It's about the Florida gators

I'm pretty sure I'm an ACB-guy ;) My body is pretty fragile and needs a lot of regen and time. Really used to love the regen part of the grind, just because you'd get back out there after a game and you could ease into the week ahead. Going full tilt (usually during the middle part of the week) was the best part. You got to hit and get your reps, less individual workouts and a bunch of team activities. Imo Football's greatest weakness as a sport (compared to basketball for example) is that team activities can be rare. Since everyone does a very individual job you'll often work with your position group and it can feel a little bit isolated from the sport. I used to be a defensive linemen and I had weeks where I never saw a football on my side of the field.

DaGuys

Yes!! That’s where I’d heard it before 😂

The montanya thing is a joke from the Adam Sandler movie waterboy. His real name is joe Montana. Kirk Cousins has been in the league many years and this is the first time he was near the top in times sacked and hit, so many people blamed it on the Vikings o-line. I cant remember if they had injuries or anything but the o-line for them was terrible last year.

I played tight end in a run-first offense so I would be lucky to carry the ball a couple times a game. Even so, every tackle hurt 😅 I had a lot of respect for my team’s quarterback and running backs that were tackled and hit dozens of times every game. That’s nothing compared to what NFL players go through! It makes sense that Joe Montana (not Montanya 😉 ) was at a 49ers-Chiefs game as those are the two franchises he played for in his career. The Bills player Kirk was talking to after the game was Case Keenum, his former back-up who threw one of the greatest passes in NFL playoff history vs. the Saints, the “Minneapolis Miracle.” This play was featured in your recent “Loudest Crowd Reactions” video and it’s one of my favorite plays ever. I’m biased since my dad’s a long-suffering Vikings fan.
