I can't remember if I've seen anyone suggest The Natural as your next baseball movie, but it's got one of the best soundtracks of all time

The Peaches should also have been playing "No Doubles" defense with their outfielders on the last at bat. Evelyn letting that ball get behind her is what cost them.

I'm of the opinion Dottie did not drop the ball on purpose. All of her actions leading up to that point suggest she was trying her best to win the game. If she wanted to blow the game for Kit she could have easily let herself strikeout instead of hitting the go ahead hit in the top of the 9th. Then Kit's the hero anyway because she pitched the team to a World Series win. Dottie also gave advice to Ellen-Sue on how to get Kit out with high fastballs. I don't think the takeaway is as powerful if Dottie simply "let" her sister win. It makes more sense to me that Kit finally overcame the shadow of her sister because she wanted to win so much more badly than Dottie ever did. That tenacity and determination overcame Dottie's raw talent. Dottie was still super proud of Kit at the end of it all and was happy for her. You can see that in all the subsequent scenes.

I always thought Dottie let go of the ball on purpose. Kit was going mad in the dugout, and after ignoring the 3rd base coach’s order to stop, I think Dottie knew that if Kit did not win she would never ever let it go. Split second decision but Dottie went for her sister. Notice the look on her face as she’s boarding the bus after…. I think she’s pondering whether it was the right thing to do. I think it was, later we see old Kit very happy with a gigantic family. But it is left open to interpretation to be sure.

Ernie the baseball scout in this film played Steve the stoned food critic in Friends.

Fantastic movie and fantastic reaction. You are so right about all of these baseball movies being really different. And . . . 42 is another one. Amazing film, but completely different.

Glad you guys watched this, it's such a perfect mix of comedy and drama. Couple of things of note: 1. Doris and Mae were not actually sisters in the movie. There's a bit of dialogue when they're at the club dancing where Doris explains how they met each other. Mae was a dancer and Doris was a bouncer at another club. 2. Dottie mentioned that when she and Bob first left to go back to Oregon that they made it as far as Yellowstone Park before turning back. The league is based in and around the Chicago area and from Chicago to Yellowstone Park is roughly 1400 miles or 2250 km. So it's quite a hike especially in the 1940s prior to the development of the US Interstate Highway system. So it makes sense that the trip there and back took about the 6 days that the first game of the World Series took place in. 3. "There's no crying in baseball!" has become the famous quote from this film. It's still used regularly today when announcers or fans catch a modern day MLB player complaining about something.

I remember watching this movie in the theater with my dad. I was 10. Damn, I feel old now, haha. But it was a great movie. I also really liked the Madonna song (“This Used To Be My Playground”) that played through the credits/baseball footage of the old ladies playing.
