Big time D1 schools do require students maintain a certain GPA but they also offer “cupcake classes” which are a joke, just to pad the players’ grades. Also lots of “tutoring” services available but it’s not much more than we see at Dillon where Riggins gets girls to do his homework for him. For many, it’s hardly an education. Mrs. Smash wants her son to get a real education at an academically challenging school. She saw Street lose his career in one play and wants her son to at least have a solid education in case a sort of Street situation happens. Smash knows the deal, he wants the NFL, doesn’t care at all about the academics. And is clearly being influenced by this girl who just showed up, but seems to know what she’s talking about. I can definitely see both sides. P.s. you may have missed it but Landry’s watch is still buried in Riggins backyard. It was lost while Landry was escaping the grave. 😀

Athletes have to maintain their grade point averages. Real life example — Rudy at Notre Dame. Maybe this is an example of deficient script writing. Along with the other examples that you’ve pointed out. The Tim Riggins story line — his moving out — is kind of choppy. But I don’t think the lady next door actually moved in. Just was hanging around too much.
