The highest paid is usually whoever signed the most recently. Teams just have a very hard time bargaining down the centerpiece of their offence when they have anyone competent. That's how the Giants put themselves in this mess in the first place. The Cowboys are currently suffering through an attempt to get Dak's price down, and they've probably screwed themselves over and guaranteed him a massive contract with someone else at the end of the year in their attempt.
