Also, one thing that might be useful to point out is that Roswall ONLY knows that Subaru can “Undo” the past, but he does NOT know HOW. Meaning that he didn't kill Subaru because he didn't know that death was the trigger to “undo” things.

Spoiler for if he takes Echidnas deal or not in the end and Spoiler for a rezero side story that will most likely never be animated ever. And very very light spoilers for this season. So there actually is a what if story if he actually were to accept Echidnas deal and he doesnt really become brain dead or anything. He just sort of stops caring and becomes disconnected with it all. In this what if story hes died hundreds of thousands of times if not millions, and he hires Elsa to be his personal assassin not to assassinate other people but to kill him so he can die quickly and painlessly. In this what if story Petra asks him of he thinks its going to rain or something tomorrow and he says he thinks so. The next day it didnt rain so he tells Elsa to kill him no questions asked which she does. All so he can reset and tell Petra it isnt going to rain. For something as simple as that he is willing to kill himself for as hes so accustomed to dying. Its so bad even Echidna is like this is excessive though she doesnt stop him.

Basically from what I remember/understand Echidnas contract would do if Subaru takes it is when lets say Subaru gets into a mess like this whole sanctuary death loop. Echidna would help him get the best possible future however as she wants all the knowledge in the world she would require Subaru to Die hundreds, thousands, if not more times to experience every path and option that loop has to offer before she finally goes "If we do what we did in the beginning of loop 26 and combined that with what we did at the end of loop 148 we will reach the future you so desire." Thats why the the other Witches made it a point to point out that Echidna said she would get Subaru his best possible future "in the end" and thats why she wouldn't say anything when Subaru asked if she would get him to the best possible future by the best possible route. Cause she as she stated wont force Subaru to Return by Death but that also means she doesmt need to tell him what the best route is either until she wants to. Hopefully this makes sense but in case it doesnt the long story short is if Subaru takes that deal he will die hundreds of thousands of times to satisfy Echidnas curiosity then and only then will he get his best future.
