I'm late to this but Maomao is 17 or 19 in the begging, so she technically isnt that young or naive for her age

Others might have been sold by their families because there were too many mouths to feed at home. At least in the palace they would be fed and have a tiny chance of catching the emperor’s eye and becoming a concubine. Cases like Maomao’s were actually somewhat rare. If they did happen, they would be passed off as a daughter who was unwillingly sold because she didn’t want to leave her family behind

I want to share the author's comment on his X account: "It's modeled after the Tang Dynasty (618 to 907), imaging the clothing, red light district, and rear palace of the Yang Guifei's era. The cultural level is around the 16th century. I also create small stories like a paper shortage situation and use scientific knowledge up to around the 19th century to make the story interesting." So, the model is old China, but the culture and knowledge are very mixed with those of other eras. Some customs could even be more Japanese than Chinese :)

I remember when Bocchi the Rock was higher in ranks than chainsaw man and people on Twitter were pissed off (XD) the same with some season of AoT and My Dress Up Darling. Some people were pissed off because Frieren went top1 on Mal. At the end of day it's just score and ranking. It has not much with quality, more with hype.

I’m talking about this because last episode you both mentioned how frieren and apothecary was aired together. Since frieren and apothecary diaries were 24+ episodes, they overlapped with dangers in my heart season 2 in winter and guess what which anime won the POLL? It was dangers in my heart from WEEK 1 TO WEEK 12. Dangers in my heart beat frieren, apothecary diaries, solo leveling EVRERY SINGLE WEEK on the poll. The only other anime that was able to do something similar is attack on titan or oshi no ko? Can’t remember… but yeah just wanted to share this The Facebook page is called Anime Corner and it has 1.2 million followers so if you search it up you’ll see Im not bs

So even servant girls of the lowest rank could become higher ranked concubines if the emperor decided he wanted to sleep with them and then they got pregnant. Their children would be princes and princesses but of a lower rank in the inheritance line than children of concubines who come from a noble background. those would also be given the highest rank of concubine and the most servants, biggest quarters, biggest allowances, priority medical care and etc. If they fell in love with another man (even eunuch) and slept with him and got caught they would most likely be executed. It could be seen as an attempt at line theft, because if she got pregnant it would be assumed that the emperor was the father. Jinshi is there to keep an eye on such things and also to see if they will be tempted

2024-07-06 22:42:34 +0000 UTCalso kinda crazy I think Cara mentioned this the first ep but Gyokuyou is indeed Frieren as well as Juju in my dress-up darling (I don't remember if we mentioned that too) and Anya in Spy X Family. Her voice has a crazy range that I have never found before, only when someone else mentioned it.

This is a pretty mild one, but is the exact kind of comment I was talking about. Judging how they react or making clarifications based on information we don't get until way later in the show.

The way Prez was saying to get into the mindset of the world and laugh about it, that's just not how my brain works. I can accept that it is part of the world and enjoy the show, but stuff like the way Jinshi was acting towards Maomao will always make me uncomfortable. I don't think Cara should try to change how she views it either. The show is still very enjoyable whether you see it as him being a creep or just some funny, lighthearted sexual harassment.

Young girls living there for years, without any chance to even flirt (eunuchs are of lower status so it's out of question for them) when they see someone who is like top1 k-pop idol they can't just fall back with urges.

2024-07-06 03:05:05 +0000 UTCAlso, while it can be comedic, I don't feel like they gloss over the fact that these women (whether in the palace or in the brothel) lack agency in many respects and are seen as objects...BUT through Maomao and some of the other characters we see them work with what they have and try to influence their fates as best they can. The show never ignores their circumstances, but gives us good characters and stories working within them.

Maomao has mentioned how low she is on the pecking order, so it seems like she’s powerless to do anything about it. Especially with our modern sensibilities(I’m sure it was sadly acceptable at the time), I really don’t blame Cara for being uncomfortable with Jinshi.

Now the power imbalance between the two is what is more unfortable whe he tries to flirt with her, in my opinion.
