If it hasn’t already been answered, Sometimes, an Emperor will have multiple concubines and the first male heir born becomes the Crown Prince making the mother the Empress. Other times, there might be someone who is already designated as the Empress but if she doesn’t give birth to the first male heir, this can lead to conflict among the other women and children over who will take the throne when the Emperor steps down. Hence, poisoning, assassination, and conflict are usually a staple for Chinese royalty in shows and novels.

2024-07-12 17:49:42 +0000 UTCLike I said on the last episode, I don't think there's anything wrong with how either of you react to the show. The show gives a pretty lighthearted take on things, but also doesn't ignore the seriousness of what's going on, I like that Prez acknowledged that at the end. And if Cara didn't like seeing how she reacted while editing and wants to put in effort to think differently that's totally fine too. What I don't like seeing is all the talk about how Cara's opinions are wrong and she needs to change them, especially when Prez says it's good to bring up that Cara might have taken things too seriously while refusing to even consider that he might be taking things too lightly. I don't mean to say that anything wrong is actually going on between you two, just that the wording of this bit feels gross. I've noticed this if Avatar too, whenever Cara has a reaction Prez wasn't expecting he immediately starts trying to figure out what she misunderstood, as if it's impossible she had a different opinion than his. Again, not saying that there is any problem between you guys, and I won't bring this up again, just maybe consider how you are wording things a little more.

2024-07-12 06:37:52 +0000 UTCthe princess had a potential to be a concubine cuz her looks or her character design atleast seem on par with the other main concubines So The general is a W for being able to avoid getting NTR’d by the emperor.

2024-07-11 20:18:08 +0000 UTCPlease don't feel like you need to temper your response! There's nothing better than seeing how someone's genuine reaction to a character changes as they learn more about the character and it's perfectly fine if that doesn't happen. I'd rather get your real take than some muted "more acceptable" reaction. Also, sorry, more general background: - mao = cat, xiao = little (often added to a name as a diminutive/for a nickname); so xiao mao = little cat/kitten - Imperial China ran roughly from 220 BC through 1911. IIRC, the writer took bits and pieces from more than one dynasty. For example, the clothes in the show are predominantly from the Tang (roughly 7th to 9th century) and Ming Dynasties (mid-14th to mid-17th century) with a splash of Song (too complicated to explain here!). - Any adult male (other than the emperor, of course) allowed free access to the Rear Palace is presumed to be a eunuch. This is why Maomao was thinking Gaoshun did not seem like a eunuch and also why Fuyou had to walk out of the Rear Palace to meet her general (who did not go beyond the outer door/into the Rear Palace). And yes, the doctor is also a eunuch. - Just as there's a hierarchy within the concubines (with those named as consorts at the top), there's a hierarchy within the eunuchs. -Jinshi is very high up since he is manages the Rear Palace and has direct access to the emperor. - The emperor's concubines are expected to be true to him and only him. And you're old enough to know that plenty of "fun" can be had even if the male cannot procreate! ETA (because this wasn't long enough 🤦🏻♀️): Yes, the cotton rose is a real flower originally from China that changes color throughout the day from white to a deep pink

2024-07-11 15:41:18 +0000 UTCAs others have said, the emperor chooses his empress from his concubines. Concubines were generally daughters from noble families. Unlike many Western societies, the emperor also got to choose the son to succeed him, which meant the first born prince was not automatically the crown prince. This also meant the first concubine to give birth to a son would not automatically become the empress and the empress may not even be the biological mother of the crown prince. So, the emperor could continue to add concubines to his harem even after he selected an empress and any of those concubines could give birth to the next emperor. Once the emperor dies, the empress (not the mother of the next emperor) would be the empress dowager, that is, being the empress was a power in and of itself even if you were not the biological mother of the next emperor (although it would've been better if you were). So, yeah, the political intrigue in Imperial China could've been even crazier than what we've seen in Westeros.

2024-07-11 15:24:42 +0000 UTCFunfact: The officer is the one that put a hold on decision about poison from previous episode. Also, Gaoshun understood what happened, but waited for Fuyou to go out of palace to report it to Jinshi, for the same reason Maomao didn't told him: Jinshi have to report everything to Emperor. They didn't want to destroy her plan on this. This show is so beautiful.

2024-07-11 13:27:35 +0000 UTCIn the world of the show the emperor is supposed to choose, from the women of the rear palace, one to become his empress (or main wife). This is usually the one who gives birth to his oldest son/heir to the throne. Even once that is done he keeps the other concubines and can still have children with them.

2024-07-11 11:34:27 +0000 UTCIt is true that Lady Gyokyou was envious about Foyou able to spend her life with the person she loves , but she is where she wants to be. By being a top concubine, she is helping her home and her family. It's a political move.

2024-07-11 10:43:39 +0000 UTCFor the emperor, you will have some answers. To be clear, at the time of the story, there's no wife. His wife should be the first concubine to give him a boy .
