Well they can't exactly choose, at least not freely. While she does protect them from bad customers and gives them a relatively good live (for their circumstances), if they don't demonstrate their worth early on, the potential to become a courtesan of the highest rank that would be valued for their purity, they have to "take customers". If they work their way up they have some power to choose which customers they take but they still have to take them.

The old Lady used to protect them from selling their body to anybody who got syphilis. They can chose a man, they can chose to just continue to work, they can refuse to sell their body and chose to only sing, play music, drink and play chess with customers. In this historical context, they are the most powerfull women that a women can be.

The Old Lady likely lived under the same rules as a courtesan before eventually running that house, she likely never knew a different lifestyle. Making her responsible for how things work in the pleasure district is like making JInshi responsible for the rules and traditions of the rear palace. She also had no reason to assume Fengxian would want to see Lakan, after all when she was still in any state to make decisions she cursed his name to the point of mutilating herself and her child. If anything "the real villain" in Maomao's life is the emperor and all of his predecessor for letting things be that way in what is basically his front yard.

She earns money by selling girls, "the not so beautiful ones" are literally basic prostitutes. Yes, the high ranking courtesans like the 3 princesses have better life, but still. That's one reason. The Old Bitch is literally the reason why Maomao's life looks like this. She is actually quite high born girl in reality, the fact that her mother was a courtesan doesn't matter. The Old Lady is a reason Maomao's mom has syphilis, she forced Fengxian to became basic street walker prostitute after the pregnancy. She hid Fengxian from Lakan, untill this episode he thought that she is dead, and he would have taken her anyways, even with syphilis as we can see in this episode. You know what's even more scary? If Loumen didn't take her as his adoptive daughter, Maomao would be a prostitute by now. All the serving girls are actually groomed to become prostitutes, or courtesans, whatever. All for The Old Lady profits.

2024-09-14 08:29:20 +0000 UTCIf you rewatch the episodes you will notice that Meimei never had any animosity towards Lakan. When you see her younger self fidget when Lakan praised her, you even get the impression that she might have fancied Lakan. Lakan is essentially autistic which is why everyone views him as weird. Meimei seems to not be put off by his behaviour. I think that the reason she was upset and lamenting that her big sis (Fengxian) should have been honest, I think what she was saying is that Fengxian should have told them that she wanted to be bought out by Lakan. While the brothel might have wanted more, they aren't completely heartless (they kept her instead of throwing her to the gutter) and a deal might have been reached with Lakan to avoid the tragedy.

Definitely the 2 best season ones ever, and they came out at the same time along with Dangers in my heart. 2023 was a great year for anime. Oh, and Lakan thought that Maomao's mom died. He had no idea shevwas alive until he heard her singing after Meinei opened the door. I cut a good portion of thevtop of my thumb off a 8 years ago and it grew back. I was 51 when it happened. It's still a bit sensitive though and a tiny bit smaller than my other thumb now.

Love because I'm getting to see the story/characters again so I'm excited, but I hate because just when I was forgetting about the wait, I get teased and then have to wait again lol.
