2024-10-18 10:42:30 +0000 UTCI've been waiting for you to watch this! Subscribed as soon as I saw you started. This is best slow burn romcom out there, after the first 5 or so episodes introduce the characters, every single one is peak. The setting is sometimes awkward or cringe since it's fucking middle school but the character relationship growth is pretty unsurpassed for a 25-episode show. Being teens is integral to the story too. It's not just a romance, but a coming-of-age tale on the changes - emotional, physical, and mental - that come with adolescence.

2024-10-09 07:43:31 +0000 UTCIt really is. Everything you mentioned has scenes from the female lead's perspective. Komi has entire chapters of the plot following her interacting with people that aren't Tadano. Yamada's thoughts are as much a mystery to the audience as they are to Ichikawa. Granted, we can pick up on things more quickly than Ichikawa, but that's because the show does a good job of nonverbal communication.

2024-10-03 18:07:00 +0000 UTCAnd I do think that the fact, that this was written by a woman in her late 30s, underlines the idea that this isn't just your run-of-the-mill wish fulfillment romcom, by some middle-aged self-wallowing male author, who still cries after his lost opportunities during his school days lol On that note, it's actually so funny imagining the mangaka coming up with all those boyish middle school "humor" jokes AND actually nailing them lmao

2024-10-03 12:57:07 +0000 UTCI might have missed it, but I'm surprised nobody in the comments so far has brought up how Ichikawa clearly has OCD, particularly intrusive thoughts. The struggle he feels isn't because he doesnβt want to βbe normalβ or is being edgy; but because his intrusive thoughts clash with how he really feels. I think many see this turning point here (ep3/4) as just going from painful cringe to wholesome fluff, and it is indeed very easy to write off Ichikawa as just edgy chuniinbyou bullshit (I mean I did on first-watch & dropped it). However, from a (teen) psychological perspective, there's definitely more to his character than just face value corny/cringy or just "self-insert introvert weirdo getting together with the pretty girl at school"-trope, that you so often find in romcom anime... Particularly when you pay attention to how Ichikawa so far has somewhat explicitly described the cognitive dissonance he feels between his (intrusive) thoughts and his (actual) feelings/actions. And now that heβs starting to actualize in thoughts (and not just via feelings) that he likes her, that as well is clasing with his intrusive thoughts, adding another layer of cognitive dissonance. It seems that being stuck between these conflicting mental states is what is creating confusion & frustration for him. Though tbf a lot also goes under the radar, due to how much this show relies on "show, don't tell"

2024-10-03 02:16:36 +0000 UTC19:06 prez: remember in episode 1 maybe she said like 4 words Because at first, they were really just strangers. Ichikawa was just in his own imaginary world as a serial killer and Yamada just wanted to eat snacks away from her friend that is allergic to snacks There's an illustration released by the author on how the two perceive each other. ill type up to episode 4. episode 1 [june july august september] - i want to k*ll her - a classmate Episode 2 [september October] - I want to k*ll her - a funny person episode 3 [october - I like her - He's interesting Episode 4 [idk if its october or november already] - I like her - He's interesting

2024-10-02 23:10:59 +0000 UTCbtw this show has a lot of subtle details and meanings that you might only catch when rewatching so watch out for that ESPECIALLY on yamada's side because the author only shows hints of her inner thoughts through actions and and stuff like on 16:21, she was shaking the fries so ichikawa doesnt hear lol and then she stops it IMMEDIATELY as soon as Ichikawa's sister starts talking because she wants to know who the girl is by hearing their conversation. You can see shes trying to listen at 16:30.

2024-10-02 22:49:31 +0000 UTCThat's not so uncommon in a male perspective story. Komi Can't Communicate, Makine are two that only have internal monologue from the male leads. Dangers is one of the best of male perspective romcoms.

2024-10-02 22:45:58 +0000 UTCYeah, look at her eyes before he gets up. She's clearly thinking "who is that girl he's with?"

2024-10-02 21:52:09 +0000 UTCdamn it's just so nice to learn new things. The way I thought about that scene was just her trying to find him downstairs because he "jump" from his seat.

2024-10-02 21:00:30 +0000 UTCSomething that really sets this show apart is that you don't get any internal monologue from Yamada. Everything she is thinking or feeling has to be inferred from her actions. Something I love about this episode is how she was clearly aware of him at the McDonald's and when she found out the girl he was with was his sister, she went to talk to him. Yamada values humor, and clearly finds Ichikawa funny and interesting. She's not really in love with him at the moment, but you can see them getting closer and it's great.

2024-10-02 20:49:50 +0000 UTCAlso, sometimes the translation isn't correct. One of my Japanese friends told me that what Yamada said at the end was "Just Yamada is fine" dropping the -san honorific which means that they are getting closer. But I guess "Let's talk more like friends" could be seen that way too

2024-10-02 20:33:21 +0000 UTCThe other choice was the wad of eraser rubbings. Ichikawa took that one so Yamada could still have the candy. He only thinks about her and how to make her happy.
