But then he answered by saying that any hairstyle would look good ON YAMADA, making it obvious that he was thinking exclusively about her while answering. And when she pointed it out, he got embarrassed. That's my interpretation, but I might be wrong

The difference in their heights was huge while standing, but much smaller while sitting. This is to show that Yamada has much longer legs than her friend, and thus has a better figure, which is why Yamada's friend was frustrated.
