86 Eighty Six Episode 14

What even is hope?

Comments

The fact that they even get any training is so unfamiliar to Shin, cause in the Republic, as soon as you reached the age of 11 you get a Juggernaut, a pistol and rifle and you're sent to the battlefield. That's why most of the people died on their first day of fighting in the Republic, it's like they really never intended for the 86 to protect them but instead just "used" the Legion to execute them all. The fact the Legion haven't breached the Republic in the last 10y is purely because of the pride of the 86, refusing to just die and choosing to go out fighting instead.

I am of the " watch the OP as soon as its available" faction and find this whole " dont want to watch the OP because of possible spoilers" attitude really silly. The OP is there for a reason. But yes, technically there are some "spoilers" in the intro. Shin and the others in Giad uniforms, the new Reginleif units are all visible, Frederica riding on FIDO so you know he will come back and some other smaller things. Again personally i dont mind stuff like that, i am more hyped by OP like that since i dont have any context for what its shown. But some reactors prefer to not see even those glimpses of things to come. I cant relate but they care about it so we can respect it.

I think it invoked some mixed feelings because its the same way the Republic remembers their fallen soldiers as we see in episode 4.

There's no spoilers in the opening before this, its fine from the start, people read into things retroactively more than new viewers do

I got the impression they were annoyed by it. They have their own way of remembering the dead and don't need this foreign way of doing it

I think the reason Eugene's death affects Shin so much is that the other 86 were doomed either way, but Eugene chose to become a soldier.

After watching this again, I realized that the physical memorial built must've lifted some weight off Shin, a proof of their existence engraved on a memorial. When Fido broke down, he left the box of names with him, that's how they were able to record the names Shin had collected. Shin only kept Rei's plate as seen a couple of episodes ago. Also, a small detail is that Shin accepts right away when someone asks if they can sit with him at the cafeteria even before he realizes it is Eugene.

That thumbnail has big picture taken seconds before disaster energy.

You can now watch the opening without getting anything spoiled.
