2024-11-24 19:49:24 +0000 UTCIt's a big part of the reason why I think Karlstahl and Annette are some of the most interesting characters in the anime/novels. Good people who know that the country is doing evil, but have become so beaten down that they can't change anything that they simply try to do the best that they can for the country, because then at least they are doing a little good. Annette copes by trying to forget, and Karlstahl just gets incredibly bitter and jaded, and starts to hate the Republic for abandoning its ideals.

2024-11-16 11:31:34 +0000 UTCIt's shocking how many people don't get Karlstahl. Like, not just disagree with him, or don't like his choices/mindset, they fundamentally do not grasp him as a character, and boil him down to "Uncle Bad".

2024-11-15 23:04:44 +0000 UTCLena's uncle is a former idealist who has become very jaded. At one point when he was young, he probably held ideals about changing the world like Lena, but he gave up on them during the war and the oppression of the 86, and just became a 'nothing I can do matters' defeatist Throughout the show he's been giving Lena that chance to find her own path as an idealist, (hence giving her spearhead squadron), trying to jade her like him, but secretly hoping (without admitting to himself this) that she proves his pessimism wrong. At the end here, he's saying, what you want to go and do won't matter, you're such a naive child you can't see everything is futile yet But, if you want to chase that futile dream, i'll do whatever I can now, to make sure you get your chance to have a go, before you get 'crushed' by the reality that nothing really matters anyway
