He is the only English monarch to be bestowed title of "the Great" aka Oikawa of England. Crazy history. England was broken up into smaller kingdoms. he ruled over the strongest, Wessex. The fractured states made it easier for the Danes/Norse to conquer, and England was a rich fertile land compared to DEN,SWE,ICL,NOR so they came to stay. All the other kingdoms were conquered, leaving Wessex/Alfred as the last holdout (Wales and Scotland were their own things. whole different story). He was soundly defeated, fled to the marshes near outside of Cornwall peninsula. Like that weird part on the SW Coast btwn Wales and Cornwall where they don't connect. Google says Bridgewater? idk. Some how rallied the boys and turned the tides. All of this was his 'holy' vision of uniting all the kingdoms under one Kingdom of England. Laid a strong enough foundation that it eventually came to be. Was a genius administrator, politician, and diplomat. Not as sexy sounding as a warrior king, but damn effective. He created the Anglo-Saxon chronicle. Using this concept of a shared history with his political mastery and Christian piety he united the people against the 'pagan' invaders. Recognizing the defensive nature he'd have to fight vs a Viking-style raiding warfare (as seen in Vinland, undefended towns were soft targets), created the Burgh system of fortified&supporting towns to repel these assaults..Un-sexily administered a tax system to fund and supply them. Again, this was all 100y before Vinland takes place. Per V.S., England had a bitch of a time with the Danes until Battle of Stamford Bridge & Willy the C's Normand Conquest ~100y after Thorfins story. The End.

2025-01-06 22:00:12 +0000 UTCthis show, obviously being a fictional depiction, does definitely take some liberties with the telling of historical events. that being said it does more often than not follow history relatively accurately, and you can pretty reliably understand the events happened as told. makes it real fun if you know any of the real history already, cuz you hear something about to happen and youre like 'ooh i wonder how theyll show it' also, askeladd best character 100%. love him
