Not to mention Raava and Vaatu are stupid concepts that undermine the world building of ATLA. The Avatar is so powerful because they can not only bend all 4 elements, but can draw on the experience and power from all their past lives. In Korra, that power is not necessarily from their past lives, but raw spirit power from Raava.

2025-01-27 20:33:03 +0000 UTCAvatar Wan episode completely ret-cons the origin of bending from ATLA. Instead of learning from dragons, badger moles, bending being genetic, bending requiring training following martial arts, all reduced to lion turtle go brrrr!! Really cheapens everything how a lion turtle can just touch your forehead and you can instantly do fireblasts w/out any prior knowledge or experience.

2025-01-27 20:32:03 +0000 UTCSeason 2 is a controversial season in the community, and for a lot of good reasons. From Korea’s tantrums, to the changing, and disregard of lore, to how Raava and Vaatu not making any sense, to Korea just instantly learning how to turn into a spirit mecha, something that has no precedent, and Tenzin just pulling information out of his butt with, “I read in a scroll the ancients…” For me, the biggest issue is Wan and Raava/Vaatu. See, with Aang, we encounter a few spirits, the biggest one that conflicts is Hei-bei, the Panda spirit that was kidnapping people after his forest burned down. Hei-bei turned angry after his forest was destroyed, but did not turn into some purple, dark, corrupted spirit. Because one of the big themes about Avatar is there is no pure light or pure dark being. As an aside, bending had no effect on Hei-bei; but Wan showed that bending could be used to battle spirits. Secondly, the battle between Raava and Vaatu doesn’t make a lot of sense. Raava and Vaatu are supposed to be equal in power, as they are opposites. Yet once Vaatu escapes, he’s able to corrupt spirits which somehow empowers him. So Raava should be capable of “purifying” spirits and doing the same. There is so much about the lore and setting from Aang that Season 2 just throws out the window it kind of makes a lot of people upset.
