It's sad that a lot of people dropped the show at the beginning of season 2 because they didn't like the slower more serious tone. I feel like I can rewatch season 2 an unlimited amount of times and always enjoy it but rewatching season 1 now is so hard for me because after seeing what the war did to thorfin it's hard to get hype again for all the violence with all the added context 😅

2025-03-06 16:38:41 +0000 UTCIm soooo glad you guys are loving S2 so far. Most people love it, but there are a lot of haters bc it's such a drastic change of pace/style from S1. You guys pointed it out at one point, but we all got caught up in the hype and action of S1, and forget that it's tragic (not just the few moments that hit hard). Thorfinn and Askelaad both became filled with hate, their purpose was killing and their ambitions were vengeance. They never felt they deserved a real life until their hate was sated, even though that was never going to happen. Seeing Thorfinn as a broken and lost man with the smallest scrap of will to live re-contextualizes S1 and the costs of his journey. I really appreciate that you both feel that emotional resonance. Special shout out to Cara on this one for connecting with Einar and seeing the strength he has. Einar is a great character, and by trying to overcome his hate for Viking warriors, seems to be reaching a hand out to Thorfinn....once he gets them off his throat of course... Last ep had some comments shitting on Einar bc he didn't go psycho Thorfinn and kill everyone or die trying when his village was raided- again- and his family was slaughtered. Despite the shock and trauma of his home being destroyed, his mother being murdered- he still tried to fight for his sister when he charges the raiders with an axe(?) but was immediately rocked in the face, concussed, and disarmed. Then tried to struggle free/was raging out while getting dragged off by warriors. He's got 0 combat exp knowledge or training. He tries, but is completely outnumbered, outmatched, and in a heavy state of shock. We all like to think we'd be S1 Thorfinn. History, esp the darkest chapters, shows at best we're Einar in his village... but most likely a passive S2 Thorfinn but more frozen disbelief than fk it. People don't often fight back in these situations. Look at the worst large scale crimes in humanity (genocides, city sackings, summary executions, etc); most didn't run or fight. IIWII.

The first is the english knight who confronted Thorfinn on the beach when he set the beacon. The second cut is his memory of fighting normans in france where Askeladd told him to get an officer's head.
