Middle school in Japan goes through 14, which is the normal age of a first year high school student in most places. That's why first year high school students in Japan are 15. With variations based on birthday, of course. Ko being a second year middle school student at 14 means either they are very near the start of his third year (i.e. early spring), or he has an early birthday that makes him slightly older than most in his grade.
