But you have to understand that it wasn't a good time moment for Leif and Thorfin to interact. As shocked as you are to see what happened with arneid they were too. Plus if you haven't seen Thorfin for years and you saw some dude with long blond hair ina ponytail and a beard I doubt you would recognize him in that moment of chaos

2025-04-28 04:32:05 +0000 UTCBouncing off of what I mentioned on your previous Vinland Saga post for episodes 15/16, I want to reflect on what Thorfinn is talking with Einar about in regards to not using violence. While it may seem like Thorfinn did the best possible thing given the circumstances he ended up in, there still may have been a better option earlier on that would have prevented all of this. Not sure what it would be, but I think Thorfinn's commitment to finding out what that is, makes him truly remarkable. I think Snake asks a really great question in episode 17 about if Gardar's life is worth more than his 5 men that died. The answer is probably not, or at least I think most people would think not. Though, if Snake's men are not worth less than Gardar, then that has to go both ways. Meaning the taking of Gardar's life is actually in opposition to the very thing that he claims to be killing Gardar for, which at it's core is that Snake's men didn't deserve to die. It simply just adds a 6th man to the pile of dead that didn't deserve to be dead. You might think, well Gardar killed first and so therefore he deserves to die, but Gardar's death doesn't actually do anything for the circumstances, but rather has the potential to perpetuate undeserved death in the future. This doesn't mean Gardar should be absolved of his actions, but we also know that he was a good man that had everything good stripped from him. The writing of this is actually very compelling/realistic. Lastly, I think this anime is about why violence almost never has a good end result, or at least it will likely just produce more unjustified violence. As clichΓ© as that sounds, it's really easy for us all to get trapped in the idea that our fight is the righteous one. That what you believe in, what your morals are, heavily outweigh another person's. Meaning that the violence you partake in could be justified by your belief that you are right and they are wrong. However, it's VERY likely the opposition will view it in the same exact manner. This becomes a very slippery slope where both sides will always be able to justify killing or harm.

2025-04-28 03:01:49 +0000 UTCRegarding the "reunion" of Leif and Thorfinn the mangaka did not feel that he should focus on the happy/joyous reunion considering the events in episode 18. " Snake was a warrior of Miklagard (the Old Norse name of Constantinople), implying that he was a member of the Byzantine Varangian Guard - an elite unite of bodyguards employed by the Byzantine Emperors, comprised of mostly Norsemen and Rus. 2025-04-27 23:29:40 +0000 UTCYeah he was only enjoyed peace because he was a coward. Unlike thorfinn who wants peace because he believes it's the morally correct thing, he only avoids conflict out of fear. This is proven when he doesn't hesitate to beat her because there no fear of retaliation. He was shaking and terrified at the thought of having to fight but as soon as he has a defenseless person to take it out on he doesn't hesitate

2025-04-27 20:08:37 +0000 UTCKethil was never a good man, he was not cruel and even not even malicious (tho I would argue not being malicious is even worse when it comes to the things he did), but he is a slave owner and he is a rapist, Arnheid was his sex slave. Whenever Kethil brought her to bed, it was never Arnheid's choice to say "no" and he spared not a single thought thowards her as a person, the show makes a point of showing us the contrast between ger umbelished beautiful face and her ragged, cracked hands, Kethil's wife hits her and mistreats her with impunity bc Kethil never saw her as a person, not really... she was a substitute for the woman Kethil lost all those years ago

2025-04-27 18:15:31 +0000 UTCYouβre actually exactly right, Snake is from Miklegard which is essentially modern day Instanbul.
