The OVA is mostly irrelevant, I agree, but it IS Cannon, and one of the mini episodes in there, does serve the purpose of giving a little bit more insight into Miko's Character... I wouldn't go as far as to say it's that important for the general plot, but ironically enough, it does affect the outcome (and enriches the climax) of season's 3 Finale in a relevant, albeit, small way... Furthermore, it is the begining of a trope that gets used for funny sketches even in the movie. Honestly, the OVA is so unhinged, that to me, that alone makes it one of the funniest episodes ever... I don't know if you have noticed, but the show (as a rom-com) pokes fun at literally its own genre (at least in terms of the Japanese take on romantic comedies)... It feels like Akasaka's purpose at writing it was to mock the genre itself! Think about it... It's a romcom, with training arcs, tournament arcs, both of which serve as character development tools, also there's a villain who lurks in the background for whole seasons, and let's not forget the deep psychological connotation of the main characters back stories... That's not a RomCom, 😂 that's a battle anime... It even makes the narrator pass as a referee! Akasaka is very thoughtful of his writing, and since he's going for a "different" kind of romcom, there's almost always little to no fanservice (even though underskirt povs, and ridiculous giggle physics for girls, are basically in every other show in this genre)... Akasaka.- "Beach episode for my romcom? F it! I'm gonna have them both main characters stay at home the whole summer, and even sh!t on their fireworks episode, by barely making them watch those from a f-ing cabs window!" 😂 You see? It feels like Akasaka was simply making fun of the genre itself, while at the same time teaching everyone how it should be done. But I digress... I'm absolutely biased because I love this show, but all that goes to say, that's why I can't share the same opinion as many who have seen the OVA and deemed it: Filthy bad, or a departure from the series that actually took away from the Love is War experience... Cuz I feel they missed the point/joke... So hear me out, if you ever get to watch it, think of it as this: Akasaka (the author).- "Oh, so you guys want a Fan service episode? I see, I'll give you a fan service episode! 🤨" And proceeds to give us the best parody of Fanservice episodes ever... 😂 Anyways, have a great day garl, love from Mexico!
