Video Index - Magnetic Building System Core

This page contains timestamped links and advice on what videos to reference when making your initial Magnetic Building System tiles.

It's designed to be easy to browse, be organised by builds, not videos, and include any advice I wish I could have added to the video, but Youtube wont let me :)

Stone Dungeon Tiles:

Getting Started with Modular D&D Terrain (generally a great video to start with, link timestamped to the dungeon tile crafting)

Updated Magnetic Stone Floor and Interior Walls

These two videos are the best place to start for basic stone dungeon tiles. The first one goes through the basics in a coherent way that isn't spread out across multiple videos (the link is timestamped, so it'll take you straight to it)

The second is a Patreon bonus video that shows how to add upgraded magnetic features to your tiles. These features aren't required, but they are really cool and useful.

The video also shows how to make magnetic interior walls, but that's something you might want to leave until you've made some exterior walls to see how they work 🙂

I made about 30 3x3 floor tiles which I've found a good number, though honestly I'd probably make maybe a quarter or even half of those 3x6" tiles instead these days to save on magnets and make laying them out even faster!

Interior walls, I BELIEVE I made or was aiming for about 20 3x2 pieces, as well as 8 interior doorways (4 centred, 4 half walls with a half wall sized door). I'll probably make more varieties in future.

My 10 tips to make things faster or cheaper video is another good one to watch early, it's got a fair few tips in it for both beginners and even more advanced crafters - tips 2, 3, 4, 7, 8 and 10 particularly 🙂

Finally, hopefully this image will help make magnet placement for floors and the below walls nice and clear, it was done by Sammy_Slick, a patron and offered to me for use in the index :)

Magnetic walls, columns, windows and doors:

These timestamped links how to make the exterior walls and columns that allow you to make modular buildings that can also be assembled as dungeons - the very core of the system :) just ignore references to the floor tiles, card tabs and roof tiles, the bits I talk about for those are both out of date and replaced by other videos now - linked further down this list.

In my first batch I made about 30 walls, including 2 doors and about 12 windows. my new, magnetic batch I made 50, all as window pieces but in the new style you can see in the bonus video, with no stone 'frame' carved around the window, so it's better hidden.

Columns I've made like, 30-40 or something because I keep changing the design slightly 😂 the latest version are shown in the cottage video, and I tend to make them in batches of 8-12.

So far I've only finished painting half, and I'm yet to make doors (aiming for 8, Stone doorways - 4 centred, 4 half walls with window piece).

I made about 7 windows and 3 shutters, though really I need more of both...😅

Magnetic walls - magnets and how to use them

Magnetic walls - card tabs (ignore this bit if you're using pure magnets)

Magnetic walls - original texture (you can replace this with the texture from the upgraded walls video linked below if you prefer)

Magnetic walls - accessory connections (this is the original cocktail stick method, you can build them with the magnetic accessory version instead from the upgraded walls video linked below)

Magnetic walls - Columns, concave corners and smaller walls these columns have also been updated with new designs, as shown...

Updated stone and wood columns here!

Making the doors - original method (this method has been surpassed by the magnetic method shown in the upgraded walls video linked below)

Making the Doorfame walls (again, this is slightly different if using the upgraded walls, linked below)

Lockdown window making method (the method for the frame is sound, but you can use the alternative method I mention here to make them a LOT faster, I just couldnt get the material at the time!)

Windowframe walls method (again, I do this slightly differently in the upgraded walls video, but this is more of a personal preference thing than an 'its just better' thing 🙂)

Magnetic walls - Adding magnetic connections to attach to magnetic floor tiles
This timestamped link shows where to add magnets to magnetise the walls instead of adding card tabs - you might recognise it as the same getting started video from the dungeon tiles section :)

This third link is a Patreon bonus video, the upgraded magnetic walls, and shows how to use the techniques shown in the first one, alongside some new methods to make walls that have no visible magnets, no card tabs and are magnetic to allow accessories to all be magnetised - something I'm working towards ongoing. Oh and also upgraded magnetic doors. And a new, better paint scheme:

Upgraded magnetic walls bonus video

Seriously, watch it before making walls, it's so much better 😄

Old interior wall method (I wouldn't bother unless trying to save a little money, the new version is WAY better!) NEW magnetic Interior wall method (use this one instead 🙂)

These links are, no surprise, your options for interior walls in buildings.

Wood floors, walls and thatch roof technique:

The first link here is my earliest method for the magnetic building system…and doesn't use magnets. It does however, show methods of making wood walls and floors for that system from foam. Just use the magnetic connections from the video above.

For numbers of each tile made, I'd mirror the stone walls. You can easily get away with 20, this is more for flexibility.

Foam wood floors, walls and columns (timestamped)

It also has a really cool thatch roof method in it, which is useful for making modular roof pieces - but I'd use the method from the full roof video for the roof, rather than what I show here. This was the early stages of the system and I hadn't quite figured roofs out yet!

Thatch technique (timestamped link, my embarrassing early video nervousness provided free of charge 😄)

The third link here is a patreon bonus video that shows how to make better looking balsa wood versions that are magnetic for magnetic accessories -- like the stone wall upgrade video and updated magnetic stone floor video, but slightly different. Because Balsa:

The upgraded balsa columns are show in the cottage video (timestamped)

How I paint stone:

This is useful if completely new to painting terrain, and a nice little colour recipe. it also shows how to make the ubiquitous black-brown wash used constantly on the channel.

Painting stone basics (timestamped)

There's an updated colour recipe for this in the updated magnetic stone walls bonus patreon video above - this more or less the colour scheme I've used on stone going forwards - the further updated method is in the pinned comment of the video :)

Modular Roof tiles:

The first video here is the bulk of the method, only small elements have changed going forwards

I made 6 roof tiles and 4 roof ends for the larger main style, and 4 roof tiles with (I think) 8 roof ends for the smaller 3x3 style.

Roof tile base technique (Timestamped. Kinda. Most of the video is relevant!)

The main differences being the removable tiles and thatch toppers from the second video

Replaceable toppers upgrade (timestamped)

And then swapping out the foam beams and wood sections for balsa in the small rooftops video.

Making the edge pieces for the small rooftops (you can basically use this method on the main roof tiles to get the same effect, timestamped)

It also shows how you might go about making roof toppers if you made them from scratch, rather than shaving them off an earlier piece like I did!

Making toppers from scratch (timestamped)

Making some small rooftops from this video also gives you way more options. But that one's a bit more of a separate project :)

Thank you so much to Mat (one of you guys!) for helping me pull this together :) There's more to come!

Comments

I spent months making Terraino (a similar modular type system) and seeing your videos pop up on my feed has made me horribly sad. This system is so much more beautiful than Terraino and now I need to start over! Subbed after the first video I watched! Looking forward to getting started.

Brian Caliendo

Glad I could help Thomas! 😁

PensiveBadger

I am just starting with your magnetic systems and this post is really helpfull. I really like the links and also the step by step index. Make the search easier. Thanks a lot!
