Inbetween Practice .AI Files

For anyone interested in helping out with the animation on this project:

(PLEASE WATCH THE COMMENTS. I WILL BE POSTING TIPS FROM TIME TO TIME.)

I'm going to be selecting a handful of people to help with in-betweening for now. Here are two sets of frames needing in-betweens. One is an animation that I just finished of the character Sonny, and the other is an animation from the first episode, Peppy getting up out of a chair.

Depending on my speed and focus, it takes me anywhere between 8-10 minutes to do each frame. I don't want to discourage anyone from trying out for this, but please only submit your in-betweens if you're pretty certain you can do these quickly and at least 90% identical to my art style. If you end up doing some in-betweens for my cartoon, it's okay if it takes you a day or two. I don't expect everyone to work as fast as I do, but I want the continuity of the cartoon's art style to remain intact.

These frames and files were created using Adobe Illustrator CS6. You must at least have version CS6. Adobe Illustrator CC will work as long as you save your work using File->Save As, and choose Adobe Illustrator CS6  in the Version dropdown menu.

These are set up the exact way I send them to my animator friends when I need frames done, except that I have added the already-finished frames to the right column, so you can compare yours with my actual finished frames for these sets. All line work is done using the Blob Brush tool, NOT the regular Brush tool. All the brush settings I use for the cartoon (titled SMALL, MEDIUM, and LARGE) are built into the AI files. You can use whichever is most comfortable for your tablet's pressure settings, as long as the lines end up having the same thickness as the other frames.

You can fill in either or both of these AI files (both preferred), and email the saved versions with your work to the email address listed in the files. I'm only going to be selecting a few people right now, based on quality and consistency, so don't be upset if I don't email you back to tell you you're on board.

Any and all questions are welcome at the email address in the files, or you can ask me while I'm doing my regular work streams. I'll answer them the best I can.

Thank you all very, very much in advance.

Hold down the Alt key and drag your pen across the canvas.

Is there a keyboard shortcut to change the size of the warp tool?

Also, make use of the Warp Tool with adjusting your lines, just make sure you double-click on the Warp Tool icon and untick Detail and Simplify in its settings. This prevents your lines from getting auto-smoothed every time you adjust them with Warp. The unticking of Detail and Simplify must be done every time you start Illustrator!

Matthew Gafford

Yeah, I just use groups.

Got it, and you usually draw all of your linework on one layer? :)

ConeZone

When working in Illustrator, double click the Blob Brush tool, and make sure your Fidelity and Smoothness are all the way to the left (only Smoothness in CC). This will make your lines less smoothed/rounded and look more like my linework.

Damn on a hot plate, I'm leaving town right now! But as soon as I set foot back home Monday, I'ma give this a shot.

Fun! Should have an email to you by end of weekend Matt

Thanks, Matt, I'll give these a swing and get back to you on this! :D
