And while they are both used to control "Boom Tubes", there are other methods of activating a "boom tube" (normally a specific item designed only for boom tubes without the added features of mother/father boxes. Boom tubes in general, are simply intergalactic teleportation 'tunnels'. Distance is not a problem, although if memory serves, it is possible to be 'trapped' in one due to errors with mother/father boxes..... at least in the comics.

They're sentient, miniaturized, portable supercomputers and they have many abilities, including: Change the gravitational constant of an area, transfer energy from one place to anothersense danger, sense life, create force fields, rearrange molecular structure of matter, absorb or project powerful shock blasts, create electro-webs, control the mental state of a host, communicate telepathically with a host or other life form, manipulate the life-force of a host to sustain it past fatal injuries, open and close boom tubes, take over and control non-sentient machines, evolve non-sentient machines, merge sentient beings into a single more powerful being, sustain a life form in a hostile environment such as space. Father Boxes are the basically the same, but they're used by the inhabitants of Apokolips (Darkseid and company).
