I think before this season of Korra most people just assumed only the Avatar could bend magma and lava because it had earth and fire in it. That might be what is tripping them up.

You guys are so awful with names. Heh. naturally the Earth Queen is designed to be unlikeable. And the grandmother's been indoctrinated to believe the queen can do no wrong. I sure hope Ba Sing Se will not be corrupt and secretive some day!

You're right about the Chinese influence, but there's no need to go as far forward in time as Mao. The Earth Queen is based very heavily on Dowager Empress Cixi of the Qing Dynasty, both in her appearance and in her policies, and the Qing dynasty were also revered by their subjects as basically gods

I never spoke of the viscosity, i said water can be bent in whatever state its in even solid, not that only fluid things are water bendable

I love how the villains in this season are pretty much Aang’s gang but evil. You have the airbender. (Aang, Zaheer) the waterbender (Ming Jua, Katara) the earth bender with a rare skill (Ghazan, Toph) and the firebender (Zuko, P’li). Not to mention they’re all prodigies just like the original gang. Also interesting to note that Mako & Bolin are not prodigy benders (as seen so far) and are just normal benders. Which is why they usually don’t fight a lot in the show.

That makes sense. China is largely based off of China. The clothes, the architecture, the names and culture. Ba Sing Se is meant to be more of the communist and controlling side of China. China is famous for keeping things from their people and being overpopulated, just like Mako and Bolin’s big family living in one apartment.

That talk about the tram makes me wonder if they've got an earthbending dynamo somewhere. Magnetite is a rock; how efficient would spinning that around a wire with magic hung gar be?

Maybe it is not about the viscosity of the material, but the material actually containing water. Otherwise water benders would be able to bend molten metal as well.
At least when Toph and Katara has the mud fight, each of them were actually bending the earth and water of the mud separately.

It was definitely Mao Zedong, especially since Earth Kingdom is highly inspired by the Chinese culture.

A lot of the citizens reverence for the Earth Queen was giving me some major North Korea vibes, or some other similar world leader. One thing I love about Korra is that unlike the original series Korra delves into a lot of world building and the fact that the avatar isn't as mutually loved as Aang made it seem.

I did like how the Earth Queen viewed Aang and Zuko turning former Fire Nation colonies in the Earth Kingdom into the United Republic as stealing Earth Kingdom land. It was a nice way to show not everyone agrees with everything Aang did for the new peace, which makes it feel more real to me.

Lava bending is earth bending, molten earth/really hot earth basically. If waterbenders can do all states of water i don't see why it can't be a similar case for Earth.
