Think of L assigning motivations and capabilities to Kira based upon his previous actions and Light's calculated moves as being essentially the same as a criminal profiler building upon their suspect knowledge and motivations. L is kind of doing this sort of thing with Kira.

There is a lot Christian religion symbolism in the series so if we are comparing it to that, I would say Light's idea of god is childish and immature.

All of the abrahamic gods are childish and immature, live the way I tell you to, even if it makes you unhappy, or i'll punish you for all time. And you have to love me for doing it. Creating life to worship you is immature and egocentric.

I just love watching people try to figure out the minds of these two. L and Light will always be at the top of the the list of amazing thinkers on tv. I personally am a full Light supporter, yet I realize just how flawed he is as a person. His mission is a noble yet insidious one, with many consequences to endure. But I still believe that he is capable of making the world a safer place, albeit through a sort of tyranny that many will find fault in. But that is exactly one of the points of this show. His methods may be horrid to many but they work, and thus begins the true question posed by this show: is Kira Evil, or is he Justice? I’ll let you figure that out.
