I don’t think the misfortune thing mention is actually talking about bad luck as in a magical sense, but that people who use it or try to profit from it just create misfortune for themselves. Light doesn’t consider this to be true for him, but consider that his actions inadvertently lead to his father having the heart attack in the first place with all pressure the Kira case put on him. There is also the argument that Light loses more of his better qualities and becomes as bad as the people he wants to get rid of like Ryuki warned back in episode 1. Taunting a woman about how he is going to kill her is sadistic, especially since it hints he is starting to enjoy killing people and getting away with it. At least that is what I think the misfortune for Light could mean without spoiling anything.
