2017-02-10 18:30:24 +0000 UTCThe creators have mentioned Tolkien as a big influence, so I think Sokka's sword is probably based on Mormegil, a black sword made from a meteor in The Silmarillion. The first-ever dragonslayer in Middle Earth used it. In early iron age cultures, meteoric iron could be used to make better swords than terrestrial iron--harder, sharper, and longer lasting. (The difference disappears as the culture gets better at smelting.) This led to legends about a magical metal that fell from the sky and was stronger than any other metal. The Greeks called that legendary metal "adamant." So basically Sokka's sword is made from the same stuff as Wolverine's claws.
