My thing is that even if the episode doesn't say they won't be explicitly physical combat matches the prisoners can just keep saying no to whatever contest Gon and friends put forth so they're pretty much forced to agree to whatever type of contest the prisoners decide anyway

I felt the laxative plan was his best play. The other stuff while solid just felt like it wasn’t the stuff of legend or all that masterful. It feels like his plans would work really well at the beginning that eventually the remaining rookies catch on to him and start to reject him. To me it seems natural progression. He is good at the start by eliminating the less talented rookies who were likely going to fail anyway and by the time he gets to the third stage of there is any rookies left they are skilled enough to realize his deal and he is left doing ineffective stuff.

Love it how they all know Leorio is going to lose to a girl without even seeing it how he is fight.

Presenting yourself as an helping pro with a laxitive.
Discourage people in the moment their confidence are waving
Playing to paranoia about the exam method to keep them
I think he was doing good at crushing rookies in simple but effective ways. This phase is the one where he suddenly sucks. It would have been easy to stay up there for 72 or 71.5 hours if he needs to see their face. And he revealed his play to them which is a bad idea to mess with them.

I think he means the normies are way further and therefore will get to York new faster.

They never say so anywhere in the rules. You have to come to that conclusion by yourself. And since they are trying to keep an open mind and not rule stuff out it creates confusion. Especially when they keep asking the contestant if they accept the challenge.

No, it's not that they didn't listen, the anime just doesn't make that point clear at all.

I don't think the anime says it explicitly, but it becomes pretty apparent by the second or third contest that they have to go along with whatever the prisoners come up with. Though i assume anything impossible would've had the real examiners (like that guy watching through the monitors) intervene

Is it a dub issue that they seem to not understand that each prisoner gets to decide how the contest will be? It's pretty clear in the manga so that confused me: each prisoner sets a type of contest, the applicants can choose between just taking a loss and refusing or having a go at the contest the prisoner proposed; so no, Gon absolutely couldn't "punch him in the face and be done with it", that'd be their second loss.

Back when I read it I assumed you could either accept the challenge of the prisoner or give up.

Rookie crusher is amusing to watch, but I agree with Aaron. His schemes seem fairly basic and only work on newbies who aren't familiar with him. The crew put more thought into how our amusing troll could have caused more damage to Gon's group by going first than he did. He doesn't even seem to excel at crushing rookies (maybe he is decent at it, but from what've seen his schemes are plain and easy to deduce after a little while).

I think Aaron's vehement dismissal of the rookie crusher's abilities will just make everyone else love him more

I recommend they binge watch the next 3 episodes, even if the reactions are not uploaded. The pace of the show gets better that.

I forgot how slow the Hunter Exam arc is, at least they're getting closer to Heavens Arena at least.

The thing with this arc and to a degree the next arc is that it is very character based. Introduces all these characters, and just let's you have fun in a way. This arc especially feels like a video game in a way. They seem to enjoy this arc, which means that they will definitely like the next arc and what's to come after that

HunterxHunter is a good show with very minimal fighting scenes. But it picks up pace after this first season.
