How Snake Pass Works | Game Maker's Toolkit

For my final video of the year, I wanted to give a little love to a really cool game: the wriggly slither 'em up Snake Pass. In this video I talk about how the game came to be, how it works, why it's rad, and why it deserves to be celebrated

Nothing about this game interests me except your take on it. I'll have to grab it if it gets cheap enough.

Co-incidentally, that also made me realize how important your video are, so here I am supporting you. Keep it up :]

This just sold me on the game, thank you Mark! I heard on off-hand comment about it being lackluster before this video, but after seeing the main concept properly demonstrated, it's definitely something I'd love! Thanks!!

Can't have a combat system anyway because Noodle would own everything! His coloring is that of a coral snake, the most venomous snake in North America. I live in the desert-y southwest US. There's a phrase they teach you for if you're out and about in the wild desert: "Red on black, you're OK Jack. Red on yellow, you're a dead fellow." There is another snake that mimics it to fool predators, but it's striping has red next to black instead of red next to yellow. Fun snake facts!

Hi Mark! Do you have a list of games that might not have ranked very well critically, but have interesting and/or original mechanics?

I didn't know this game yet, but I'm looking forward to play it - I really like when a game is challenging and I love the expression on the snakes face!

Aside from Edith Finch and Mario Odyssey, this is my Game of the Year and so I am glad that you spent an entire video on it. At first I was frustrated with the controls and by the fact that collecting the items was not needed for any bonus content. But the more I played the more I realised that the game succeeds so much in its gameplay mechanics that you do not need any reward to try and collect everything. You want to do it because it is so much fun. Controlling the snake through these levels to the music of David Wise is relaxing and challenging at the same time and when you learn to master those controls without the help of tutorials you really feel like you have accomplished something. I can not praise this game enough. Everyone: Buy it!

Awesome video, and a good choice aswell. I love how you analyse games in ways that some times it might not be clear to the eye. You know what I would like to see next year? You proposing game. Even though there is a great variety of types of games, I believe that you would make a great game, and who knows, maybe some day you'll develop it.

Been really excited about this game because I'm thinking about picking it up! I'm so glad you made a video on it.

It’s not like TT2, but it’s also not entirely linear. It’s split up into levels and in each one you can collect the stuff however you like, so you chart your own course through the obstacle course

Is Snake Pass linear or is it like Toki Tori 2, where your progression depends solely on your understanding of the game's mechanics?

Haha, I hate snakes too but this is okay because of the goofy eyes. Though, every now and again the lifelike movement does catch me off guard and creeps me out!

Great video! I've always wanted to play this game but I'm terrified of snakes.
