24 hour exclusive - The Two Types of Random

Hello!

The new episode of GMTK is finally here! After a much needed Xmas break and then a particularly gruelling editing process on the new video, it's finally done. Almost - this version doesn't have the Patreon end screen and some final edits like all the game tags and sources.

Thanks again for your help on the GMTK Workshop. Sorry to those who wrote in messages after I started editing - I had to give myself a cut off point or else I could work on the script forever. I'll do better at communicating the cut off date in future, so your stuff doesn't get missed..

I'm still after feedback on this final video though - anything that doesn't look right, sound right, or any other criticisms or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

Mark

Great video as usual, I especially love this because it really helps me articulate my stance on randomness. I am, extremely predictably, a huge fan of input randomness and one who despises output randomness. You did shift that opinion for me a little though with that bit about rare, positive output randomness. The problems with output randomness really are just that feeling of a situation being bullshit when you did the right thing and it didn't pay off because the RNG decided to give you the finger or relying on some positive output randomness that has a decent chance of occurring and being let down when it doesn't come through for you. I guess the key to good output randomness is simply.... a surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.

Ending with the GMTK logo as the brass instruments play their final note felt great but I think the song doesn't fit well to his speech. I see he's going for a Casino-feel while talking about randomness, but it felt really off imo.

This is excellent mark, very interesting and thoroughly researched, and I enjoyed the Epidemic graphics scroll, thought it was cool, v slick. Only thing that I'd note is that the episode is bookended with a Cuphead theme, but the topic doesn't involve Cuphead (ie it's not a game discussed). It's a minor quibble, it's a great aesthetic and I enjoyed the Mr King Dice title wipe 🙂
