How to Become a Game Designer

New video!

Bit of a different topic this time: instead of talking about game design, let's talk about game designers themselves. How, exactly, do you get a job in the industry?

This was one topic where I have absolutely zero experience, so I relied very heavily on my expert interviewees. It was fun to Zoom a whole bunch of people and build up a huge database of shared knowledge - then dump it into a video.

Hope you find it interesting, even if you have no interest whatsoever in becoming a game designer.

Hi Mark. I teach a game development course for high school students. Everything you've outlined in this video is exactly the message I've been trying to convey to my students for years. You've done such an excellent job of showing that all here. I've been a fan of your content for a while and occasionally show your videos in class. I became a backer on Patreon as soon as I finished this video and will be sharing it with my students the first chance I get. Thank you for what you do.

I wish you'd mentioned another way to protect yourself: joining a union. That's what they're for. I know GWU in Australia's working on getting people into unions to combat the awful conditions.

That was an outstanding video and 90% is applicable to my profession (mobile app development). I’m going to point people here when I get asked how to break into the industry. “Make something” is right.

Very nice video. About a follow up I would suggest maybe look at some solo / (smaller) indie-games and what makes them different from the AAA-titles. I know I enjoy smaller indie-games more than AAA-titles, but having a hard time articulating why that is... so maybe you could find what makes indies indies ^^

nice video! a good follow up video would be about overdesigned games and how crunch and pressure from managers/execs on workers impacts game design games like RDR2, LoU2, CP2077, and studios like Tell-Tale contrasting it with more worker-driven games/studios (Motion Twin's Dead Cells for example) and independent game studios or solo developers

@ 1:44 Nice touch making the User Experience designer someone in a wheelchair. :)
