Patron Preview - Can We Make Better Tutorials for Complex Games?

Hello again!

A new episode is here - it's all about the troublesome tutorials of complex games (such as city builders and grand strategy games), and ways to make them better. What can they learn from other genres, in order to make learning easier and more fun?

If you caught the $5 preview for the UI episode you might recognise some stuff about Mini Metro and Animal Crossing. I actually removed that from the final video because it didn't fit super well, and I realised it might be a better fit for a video I had been thinking about making. This video!

Hope you dig it. All feedback, ideas, and errors would be much welcome ahead of the final video's public launch on Monday.

Cheers

Mark

Your thoughts around having a beginner friendly ruleset for games such as Civilization and Crusader Kings is something board games have been doing for quite a while. Mindclash Games are a good example of this, who are well known for only releasing board games with really complex rules. To help on board players they include a "Basic Ruleset" for each of their games, intended to be played by first time players. Even the basic versions are really complex, but despite that, they're still more approachable than the "Full" Version.

My personal TL:DR -- Making complex games approachable is a good time for a game dev to start thinking like a UX designer (or just hiring one)!
