Nintendo - Putting Play First | Game Maker's Toolkit

New episode! Will be going out to the world later today

So, it's about Nintendo's design philosophy and how that has shaped the games it makes. Should be lots of interesting stuff for Nintendo fans (I know I learned a lot while making it) and plenty of design tidbits too.

I hope to go more indepth on things like strong core mechanics and 'form follows function' in future episodes, too.

As you may know, this one was a long time coming but I'm glad it's finally done and I'm pleased with the result. Time to move on, now! First up, Minish Cap Boss Keys. Then something non-Nintendo for a change ;)

Also, I was interviewed for the Critical-Distance podcast last night. I'll drop a link on Patreon when that's available. It was weird but fun.

You have a way to explain things and dive into the games that make your videos an absolute pleasure to watch. Regarding the Nintendo philosophy, I just read this book https://bossfightbooks.com/products/shadow-of-the-colossus-by-nick-suttner about Shadow of the Colossus which is a great game built around a single idea and gameplay. The book is also quite good too for anyone who likes games. It manages to both evoke the game atmosphere and analyze the game.

Another FANTASTIC video.

Great video!

Really liked it. Adding all those game clips must have been tedious. Impressive! Not sure if this is a worthy idea for a future vid, but I've always been interested in games where you place items... like Tower Defense games (defense grid) or worker/building placement games (settlers 4, factorio), even certain sim games (another brick on the mall, I hear it's similar to prison architect). I think the concepts in the games that make them fun are more raw and straightforward in that it's all about upgrading and expanding. It's one thing I've found that Diablo II ran away with with exceptional and elite items even though it's a character centric game. The skill tree replaces what would be buildings/resources in other games. Anyways, throwing ideas out there. Not sure if you're into those kind of games though.

Great video!

Fantastic. Looking forward to the vid!

Having recently read A Game Design Vocabulary, this resonated so much with that book. It's all about choosing a verb and then exploring and developing it, finding new ways it can interact with the objects around the world.

Also - super special thanks to whichever Brazilian Patron managed to get a Portuguese translation done before the episode is even available. Now that's dedication!
