“So?” Amari questions as I draw near.
“Don’t even ask,” I sigh,<<if $poly>> “at best, Syd finds what the problem is. Worse, we hitch a ride to the nearest town and call someone to tow it to a professional.” <<else>> “I’ll have to call someone to tow it, and we’ll need to hitch a ride.” <</if>>
“Oh!” she suddenly says, eyes wide as she glances down the street. “I’ve always wanted to be a hitchhiker.”
“Said no one ever.”
“In the movies, it’s exciting.”
“Is that before or after the driver tries to kill you?” She snorts, giving me a look that I find difficult to decipher.
“I’m a vaewolf<<if $poly>>, you’re a reaper, and Syd is a cambion.<<else>> and you’re a reaper.</if>> I really don’t think we have anything to worry about.”
“Yea,” I grumble, glancing away, “until you learn they’re supernatural too.” She doesn’t reply, probably because my words don’t change anything. She’s right, <<if $poly>>three<<else>>two<</if>> supernaturals have nothing to worry about, but I still see no point in putting us in such a situation.
“It’s funny,” Amari says abruptly.
“What is?”
“I’ve been here a lot; I just realized that. I sometimes ran away. Not for very long, but long enough for my parents to always become terrified.” She frowns. “I wish I had just kept walking.”
