Loved it!!💕 It had me in tears again seeing him so emotional when we hardly see him express his emotions; it’s so satisfying to see all of Jinwoo’s hard work pay off. Can you believe that was the lowest rated episode in the show?!? Like, WHY??😭 It was so heartfelt!

2025-04-23 03:10:48 +0000 UTCI apologize now for the novel you’re about to read.🤣😬 This is where I have my true gripes about plot changes in the anime vs the source material: 1. Thomas Andre’s introduction was cut—which makes me sad, cuz he’s one of my fave characters. But we’ll see him in the future! 2. The start of the Jeju raid robbed anime only fans of what could’ve been an epic shot of the Korean hunters jumping from the plane onto the island after Choi Jong-in blasts the ants with his fire. 3. In the gymnasium scene, there is a heavy animosity between the Korean & Japanese hunters that the anime downplayed. The Japanese S-ranks think they’re superior to the Korean S-ranks. This prideful attitude lends better setup for why they let their guard down around the ants when the raid started. The manhwa’s exposition of the dynamics between the Korean vs Japanese hunters sets the tone for the Jeju raid. 4. Goto Ryuji loses his composure while sparring & starts truly fighting Jinwoo to almost murderous intent (which we know will trigger the system, & Jinwoo acknowledges in his thoughts). After Jinwoo’s final attack (when he grabs the fingers), Goto is struck with tremendous fear from Jinwoo’s strength. Supposedly, the anime adapted the light novel’s version of events—but this change left fans of the source material divided. It’s a big change in the narrative. Why? The purpose of the Japanese joining the Jeju raid is to conquer an S-rank dungeon, which gives Goto the credentials needed to rise to a national rank hunter. However, Jinwoo choosing not to join the raid despite being stronger than Goto (who is supposed to be the strongest hunter in the Jeju raid) is damaging to the pride of the Japanese, who are there using a false pretense of helping as backup. The Koreans are dealing with a crisis, & the Japanese hunters have their eyes on the prize. It’s like letting the Koreans do the dirty work, & then stepping in to claim the victory. I’ve saved my thoughts on this last change until now… cuz I think the animation studio chose this direction BECAUSE they’re Japanese—& Solo Leveling was known to have very patriotic themes for Koreans, painting the Japanese in the story to be deceitful & power-hungry. (And IRL historically there is bad blood between the Koreans & Japanese.) It’s also why I think there’s a global version & Japanese-centric version, to not upset Japanese viewers. I understand the reasoning for the change, but it flips the tone of the plot to do it. Personally, I don’t feel like Solo Leveling is trying to villainize Japanese people, cuz they aren’t the only country portrayed that way in the plot.
