Vinland Saga S1 Ep 18-19 | The Prince had an AWAKENING!

Canute is going to be a force to be reckoned with! We know it! Love you all H & J

Thorkell the Tall is actually based on a real historical figure, and there’s this story that he had a “glass jaw” because his bones were unusually large. Apparently, getting hit in the chin was more dangerous for him since it would shake his brain around more than normal. Basically, his jaw was his weak spot. This story is pretty well-known in Scandinavia, though it’s unclear how much of it is actually true or backed by anatomy. Personally, I think it kinda makes sense, like, a larger skull might cause more vibrations in the brain if hit just right. Still, whether his weak jaw came from being tall or if it was just some weird flaw in his body is all just guesswork

Canute is a real person in history. If interested, look him up on google and you can of have a idea of where the story may go somewhat that won't really spoil Vinland Saga since its a dramatization of some events that occurred IRL.

Just read this comment after writing mine and we basically said the same things. 💯 I love this show so much.

Oooooh, you reached my favourite episode by far!! Watching it again made all those emotions I felt the first time come back like a flood...this must be the best moment of S1. Canute confronts the flawed nature of human love, rejects divine tests he deems unjust, and seizes agency by choosing to build a paradise on his own terms. It’s a powerful symbolic and literal moment, marking his birth as a leader. I can't believe I'm crying while I'm writing this... that's what I meant when I said this anime gives me feelings I never experienced with any other show. And I mean ANY, not even OP. I know, it's an unfair comparison as they are very different, but in these days and times, VS addresses some very deep questions on humanity and love and religion, in a way I have not seen done before. Top tier in every way for me.

The priest and Canute's conversation and his awakening after that is one of my favorite scenes in all of Vinland Saga and it's so deep. This is my interpretation after thinking a lot about it after I had read it in the manga: If you recall the priest throughout their journey has been trying to find the meaning of "love". In the conversation with Canute he notes that Ragnar's love isn't love but discrimination. What he means by this is that it's different from what he's looking for. The priest is looking for a specific kind of love, an unconditional love, that is exemplified by Jesus Christ, who sacrificed himself for ALL of mankind whether they are sinner or saint. He points to the soldier's dead body saying that that's love because he becomes one with nature, he no longer hurts others and gives what's left of his body freely to the environment, God's world. Canute realizes the snow, the sky, the sun, the wind is all God's love because it treats everyone unconditionally regardless of who they are just like Jesus who died for everyone's sins. So this leads to Canute realizing that the world is full of God's love but the hearts of men are the one place where it's missing. If you guys have ever seen the show The Wire, there's a scene in the 1st season where a character talks about how "the game is rigged". That's sort of the conclusion Canute comes to, that humans are tested by God in order to be granted entry to heaven but ultimately they will never get in because they don't have God's love in their hearts. That's why he resolves himself to create a paradise on earth because he feels that SOMEONE has to save humanity as he believes the trials and tribulations to get into heaven are rigged from the start. And this isn't even considering all the daddy issues Canute has with his biological father. You read a lot of his internal monologues in the episode as him addressing "father in heaven" in other words God, but you could also read it as him addressing his actual father. Anyway, those were my thoughts and this is one of my favorite scenes in any entertainment medium that I've consumed. I feel like the author does such a fantastic job of making you think about faith and love in a way that you don't normally get to experience.
