This is super fun and insightful information about Han Geng and Yibo! I also live the fact that all 4 captains have some affiliation and overlap with one another which is super cool!!

I can totally pick up what you are feeling regarding Zyko! I feel this may also have something to do with his song choice for his "audition" in Han Geng's group in the early episodes! LOVED his movement quality this season! I also feel that I'm not the biggest fan of Mr. Three this season in general because he also makes Henry come across a bit naive because he has been super quick to compliment and praise Mr. Three for the plagiarized concepts (I'm not blaming Henry for that! Most people didn't know of Hitesh at that time so it's not really his fault and Mr. Three should have been more honest...) And thank you for the clarifying info with Yibo and Uniq! I think I had a couple of their songs back in the day so it's a nice reminder haha!

So glad you also agree with the body paint!!! And 100% makes sense regarding what you mentioned about ACKY and Ibuki! These translations need to get it together haha! And I absolutely ADORE Chinoserie so freaking much. So much so that I am tempted to travel to Asia with the sole intention of learning the craft first hand at some point! It looks so captivating and I would love to incorporate it further within my own movement quality with Waving!

Han Geng and Yibo have a real special bond - and they are from the same big entertainment company Yue Hua in China. Han Geng is a big share holder of Yue Hua and he's kind of the a right hand of the female boss from Yuehua, Du Hua. Du Hua is the CEO of Yue Hua. Cause of the big growth of Yibo with him being now a superstar in China (especially of his excellent acting) and internationally, they made him last year a major shareholder of Yue Hua too. And some rumors even saying, that Han Geng has some tasks in managing Yibo. So they really work good together!

I think what made the Ma Xiaolong and Zyko performance extra great for me is how well they meshed together. Zyko is always referred to as a hip hop dancer in this show but he always seem to has this contemporary/modern feel (sorry not well acquainted with the contem/modern so just layman's lens on this). He just works so well with it and is comfortable that he can even active express it in his face which makes it a total performance. Ma Xiaolong also incorporated Zyko's tracing (?) seamlessly into the choreo so it all came out beautiful.
The popping C, George, AC, Ibuki battle was such a happy vibe. Such joy and fun all around hahah. Wish we had these vibes in SMF/SWF hahah. Just joy.
With Henry I think it's not so great that he's teamed with Mr Three. both of them seem to prefer gimicks and acting so I find that in their choreo they tend to do more of than vs dancing. From the practice shots the more interesting bits imo were the ideas from Rochka. Tbh Yibo's team looked better than their bts shots showed. I preferred theirs because they danced more and felt less gimicky.
The song that Han Yu and Chika used is actually Japanese. It's called Senbonzakura and pretty famous.
Oh and yeah Yibo was from Uniq. I think they were not contracted with YG and were just training there. The group is actually run by Yuehua which is also the same company that Hangeng is from.

Ah, so many things to talk about. First of all, yes, Derek and Zyko performance is absolutely one of the best performances of the season, if not the entire show. I watch the show on my own and I'm not the type of person to comment out loud or anything, but this was one of three instances across the 5 seasons of SDC that I've watched when I actually screamed at my screen. It was so beautiful and iconic--perhaps a bit too iconic, but that's for SDC5 🤣
And yes, about Huang Xiao/Kenken performance and the body paint. I've always thought they should've switched, not only because of the visibility but also thematically. The Tai Chi symbol always has black on white and white on black halves - if they each represent a half, then the black paint should've been on the paler person and the white paint on the more tanned person. That would've made the imagery better imo.
If I understand Acky correctly, what he said about Ibuki was that the track had very strong popping beats, so he was surprised she could use waacking so effectively to it. I think that's a common sentiment and also why both Ibuki and Waackxxxy are so highly lauded - of course, they're both really good with disco music, but there are many other waackers just that good. But when it comes to more open-style music, they both don't lose steam and do just as well, while most other waackers really struggle.
One point you brought up early was how you felt that SDC6 had much less focus on choreography. I think that's just the general trend of the show - comparing SDC seasons 3 to 6, there's a steady decline in how much choreographers are utilized/valued on the teams. SDC3 had by far the most emphasis on group choreos, and with each new season, we see less and less of it. I think it's just the general trend of the audience - people talk a lot more about the battles than the choreographies online, so the show is just adjusting to viewer preference. When it comes to the decline of Chinoiserie on the show, I blame Lay leaving. He is by far the most vocal proponent of the style, and after he stepped down from the show, unless there was a dancer who specialized in it, we barely see Chinoiserie concepts anymore.
I'm excited to see part 2 of it. Hopefully, if you're filming EP 7 in Korea, you'll have an easier time since it's just the SDC party episode - the first one, actually, since it's in this season that they started the party tradition.
