[BOYS PLANET] EPISODE 4

[BOYS PLANET] EPISODE 4

Comments

Jongwoo gave Hyunjin energy and he looks like Changbin a bit, at least predebut, initial debut days changbin. I have heard other reactors call him Mini-changbin!

Pratiksha Majee

The Burn It Up leader understanding that he needs to be someone the young trainee can rely on instead of criticizing him was very important. I think it also happened coz the trainees were kids and so the leader also treated them with kid gloves, very carefully after understanding they are kids and 0 stars and so has no confidence but in Universe League I think no one helped that one trainee in ep 2 or could become someone that trainee can rely on coz they didn't see him as a kid that needs to be handled carefully plus he was not a bench trainee but a starting line up trainee. It maybe coz they didn't view him as a kid that they gave him criticism as someone would give to an adult or something that an adult can handle but he couldn't while here in BP , the trainees are literally babies as they say so it was easier for the leader to also recognize that he needs to be a approachable leader instead of a harsh one. We also have to remember everyone is a trainee here, not a mentor and are in a lot of pressure and not everybody even has that leadership quality in them to understand their team members. Everyone wants to focus on themselves also and often forget to lend that helping hand. Having a leadership quality is not easy and not everyone has it. So it's good to see such good leadership from trainees.

Jongwoo was a personal favorite from the show as well. He's in ONEPACT now with 4 other members from the show and their music SLAPS. The Stray Kids stages were great and housed a lot of members that would make it super far.

AW I JUST REALIZED MINSEOK THE LEADER OF THE K WANNAONE TEAM IS ABOUT TO DEBUT IN A.C.Es HOOBAE GROUP "Newbeat". Now that I have seen what a mature and wise person he was here in this setting I WILL be supporting (even though I was anyway...I saw them do their thing on tour like 3 times lol). Imagine being that mature at 19-20. Took me years of therapy to get to that point to recognize my own need for growth independently. ETA: PSYCH I WAS COMPLETELY WRONG PARK MINSEOK DEBUTED YESTERDAY with Their pre-release track is Jello I'm going to go watch now.

Wild ride over here haha 😂😂 I’ll get them at some point

It's so funny how you're still bad at remembering zb1 member's faces

I love getting to watch this alongside you guys because I never think to mention this kind of stuff when it’s just me haha. Love that we get to learn from each other and all grow together !!

Jessica Holyfield

I don't know if I've said this before but I want to say it again, I absolutely love how you talk about and explain why a trainee could be responding/reacting the way they are shown to be. It's honestly changed my perspective of how I view some of these situations. Like on almost every survival show, theres always that one trainee who's seen as unmotivated, lazy, doesn't want to be there, etc. And it is often one of the newer never trained before trainees who are falling behind that get that treatment. And I've definitely bought in to that "They need to get it together and stop dragging the team down" mindset before but it makes total sense that while some trainees can pick themselves up and push through the mental block, some people's natural response is to shut down so they "can't make any mistakes if they don't do anything" . That statement just makes so much sense for so many of these trainees that were portrayed as "Lazy". Also how you point out how it's also not the rest of the group's fault when they don't know how to respond to someone who shut down. Since at the end of the day, these guys are also in competition and learning how to handle different types of people. So glad we got to see a lot of this in Burn It Up K-team's behind the scenes. Like we saw Minseok scolding Seyun for slacking but then he took a moment to reflect and then talked it out with Seyun later. Yes the interactions aren't always going to play out this way (Like in Universe League Beat team) and we do have to remember that these guys are all young and not going to be perfect and know exactly what to say and do in all these types of situations and should be given the leeway to learn and grow. I've been watching Project 7 recently and I only just realized, 9 episodes in, that Seyun was on this show too. He's a completely different person here and even tried to be a leader during one of the rounds.

i have a couple thoughts about the “evil editing” occurring majorly this episode. first, there is no way that daeul and krystian didn’t say what they said, there is no way to evil edit those sentences coming out of their mouths. however, especially from their talking head segments, we are missing so much context. we also don’t know if that’s all they said, editing can absolutely remove follow up statements and conversations that show these conflicts getting worked out. especially directly after g group danger where we saw members of that group have a pretty similar fight but we also saw them work through it. secondly, it doesn’t surprise me these 2 in particular are being portrayed this way. daeul, who consistently ranked in the top 9 but lacked basic skills (which is totally reasonable as he’d only been training 4 months) would’ve cost mnet and wakeone a lot of time and money to train properly to debut, which is not something they were wanting to do. krystian who had worked as a singer previously and had an existing fanbase and consistently scored pretty high was not one of the few chinese trainees that mnet decided they liked enough to continue in the competition long term. we as viewers also know from experience, especially from girls planet, that mnet will evil edit chinese contestants more than anyone, which is something some of the contestants were also incredibly cognizant of. as the series continues you’ll see people sneakily fight against it, including zhang hao who wore different funny hair clips everyday so that the editors couldn’t mess around with his footage too much.

watching the first elimination next week will feel different knowing that way over half of all the trainees are active as idols right now or are going to debut soon (shuaibo, woongi…) just last week there were 22 boys planet contestants on the same music show as part of 5 different boygroups bp really feels like one of the starting points of 5th gen

daze_daisy

Definitely agree with you! As someone with experience on being a technical producer, specifically for audio, it’s so blatantly obvious when MNET edits in clips together to make it something that’s it’s not. It’s actually hilarious to me LMAO I just roll my eyes sometimes😭 And yes, they definitely do withhold footages and heavy editing in order to paint a narrative. You don’t sound like a conspiracy theorist at all! It’s just the truth :) My point was just that, to label every situation that does not necessarily paint the trainees in the best light, is to deny accountability especially in cases like these where they said what they said, and did what they did. If that makes sense? P.S Daeul is adorable and Krystian was one of my faves when he was on another show, I literally went to war defending him during this. I lost sleep fighting literal pixels on the internet over that man😭😩

miajoon_

Oh I absolutely agree with you. Mnet didn't have to edit or dramatize anything to show what Daeul and Krystian said to their teams and how it affected them. I understand wanting to show the best parts of them on stage. When I refer to evil editing, I don't just mean showing a trainee not being the best teammate, I mean the stuff we don't see as well. Like the music choices, which Jess has called out before, or splicing together reactions to make it seem like they are reacting one way (like Doha sitting in the audience to his OWN performance of My House). With Mnet editing being as manipulative as it is, I always try to note to myself that they could be withholding footage or editing reactions to appear a certain way. It sounds silly but with Mnet you can never be too careful imo, so I always take what they show us with a grain of salt. I definitely sound like a conspiracy theorist but that's just me lol

Nathaniel Wanner

I like the integration from trainee self evaluation in this show. Getting feedback from people who are in a similar situation can be very productive. Also the act of watching others and formulate the great and still lacking aspects can help to reflect on yourself or be a form of motivation. There are probably also harsh or very biased comments but I think overall it improves practice and is a welcomed addition to the feedback from the professionals/mentors

daze_daisy

I definitely agree with you on a lot of your points, especially with MNET's tendency for manipulative editing. With that being said, I feel like we shouldn't brush everything that the trainees have done, that may be seen as "evil", under the rug or label it as "evil editing". For example, the Daeul and Krystian case. MNET have obviously dramatised the whole situation, but the things they said weren't cut out from another clip and pieced together to make them seem "evil", they genuinely said and did it at that time and at that situation. Denying otherwise, would UNDERMINE the whole circumstance. It would undermine the whole group's struggle, the leader's efforts, the trainer's advice and invalidate the people directly affected (e.g Kamden literally cried). Most importantly, it would also be denying their progress because they HAVE absolutely learned and grew from this. For Krystian and Daeul's case, it was a high tension environment. They were stressed, away from home, and acted like human beings. That doesn't make them bad people, but it also doesn't excuse their behaviour because their group was affected and people felt hurt. It got resolved, that's the end of that. I do think people are so quick to villainise trainees though and expect them to act like perfect human beings, but then turn around and complain about how "factory-like" idols are and that they're too "manufactured" when they give no grace for and mistakes.

miajoon_

Regarding Sung Hanbin’s stability my guess is that it’s a posture thing. His torso stays pretty upright whenever he’s dancing. I’m not a dancer so I not sure if the habit comes from his wacking / tutting background. However, I think his uprightness keeps his diaphragm (and by consequence his breath support) from being compromised.

I mean, a separate thing we have to remember is that there are a lot of contestants on the show who had fanbases pre-boys planet. I'm not saying Hui didn't deserve the win over Jay, and quite frankly, K Love Me Right definitely blew it out of the water and I preferred Jay's tone, but Hui had a whole career under his belt. I feel like regardless of "who did better" Hui would've got more votes anyways.

Emma Ko

Loving your analysis on the dances and the manipulation Mnet does! It was much easier to get absorbed into it when we were watching week to week, but looking back it's very blatant what they're trying to do. They already got sued for manipulating the vote directly, so they have to manipulate the viewer directly to vote for who they want through editing. Like the blatant evil editing for Krystian (on G-group Back Door team) or Daeul (K group Danger team). Spoiler but this goes on to SEVERELY affect their votes moving forward. Keep in mind, Daeul was top 9 in Ep 1. I was also excited to see your reaction to Park Hanbin teaching the Hot Sauce team, since it's widely considered that he brought the best out of his group with his teaching and leadership. For Love Me Right, I definitely agree that K group did it better, but G-group is more memorable for me. I STILL see people talk about Jay's high note for Love Me Right. I remember seeing some things online that Anthonny was sick during this performance, hence why he doesn't sound good, and some online rumors that Mnet didn't want Dang Hong Hai, someone from Vietnam, in the spotlight so they just don't give him screentime. Dang Hong Hai and Anthonny were 1 and 2 for most popular G group trainees but as you'll see (or won't see I guess) Mnet will not give them the time of day, and without screentime in this show, you basically don't exist cause no one will remember you to vote for you. Fun fact, the 'first survival announcement' was this whole thing implying that Mnet was gonna livestream the elimination, which they had never done before. In reality they livestream the trainee's entrances, the Master that will officiate and the first trainee to survive before being like 'if you wanna know who else survives, watch the episode lol'. The livestream was on early in the week (A Sunday/Monday for me if I remember correctly), but the episode aired on early Thursday morning for me. They then changed the title from 'FIRST SURVIVAL ANNOUNCEMENT' to 'FIRST SURVIVOR ANNOUNCEMENT' trolling all of us. The elimination can drag but I've always found it fun since everyone speculates on who and who doesn't make it. Plus the side games they do are always a treat since the show is usually super stressful for viewers and trainees, seeing them have fun is always nice. Plus, as you saw, there is a dance battle so I'm REALLY excited for you to see that hehe

I do feel like G-groups were operating at a disadvantage during this round. The language barrier isn’t just them having to learn to sing in Korean, but communicating amongst each other since the teams often consisted of members from multiple countries so they’re all trying to get their points across in languages they don’t fully understand in which does slow down progress. And while most of K-group’s guys came from some sort of K-pop company with some training, a lot of G-Group’s didn’t. Like, if you look at the G-groups that did considerably well; “Kill this Love” and “Love Me Right” majority of the guys in those groups speak fluent Korean and are trainees under a K-pop entertainment company. So I feel like G-group was set up to lose because they had a bigger hurdle to jump through. Thankfully the whole K vs G goes away after this round. As much as the show tries to paint this K vs G rivalry, we do get to see moments of the guys helping each other out and getting along. Like how Kamden approached Hui on how to be a leader. There is an extra behind the scenes clip on YouTube of Hot Sauce teams, K-group shared their stash of snacks with G-group and the guys played around. Park Hanbin is someone to look out for. He’s a monster trainee who’s SO GOOD. Honestly he’s one of the ones you wonder why he isn’t in the Top 9. Because he’s a very good performer, often shown helping others, and does get spotlighted a good amount throughout the show. Sidenote for the next episode: It’s elimination episode. If you don’t want to sit through the elimination moments (I know some reactors say that as pointless because it already happened and we know the line up etc), I’d suggest watching those parts in like 1.5 or 2x speed rather than just skipping it entirely because there are cute moments in those and it helps remember faces.

the way you always refer to jiwoong as "🎵ohh yeahh🎵" is so funny to me 😭

oddinry

Also, I forgot to tell you Chen Renyu, the arms guy from Burn it up, he himself made a parody of the whole arm montage situation in his tik tok account 🤣🤣🤣

Its Just Lustfly

Omg the Sohye thing indeed remains iconic almost a decade after 😂

With the Krystian situation on Back door G group, I believe they all auditioned for the Killing part first and Krystian won that vote, because all the groups do the same to choose the killing part, they showed it with KTL G group when Matthew auditioned for it, but didn't get it. They just don't show that process for all the teams because they find other dramas to focus on. And that's why Krystian said "Why do we have to vote for this when we already voted" The change of parts happens rather often in those shows after the teachers review the progress and give suggestions Park Hanbin is great, but he came accross too full of himself. At least that was the impression I had of him and the reason I didn't vote him, even tho I was in awe of how good he was there was other people I find as good as him, but more... Likeable? maybe? He is currently in Evnne

Its Just Lustfly

Hahaha Mnet did everything they could to MILK Chen Renyu’s arm muscle memory fiasco in Burn it Up G-team. And it was just a split second thing that I feel like most people wouldn’t notice unless the footage is slowed down and you’re looking for it frame by frame? I honestly was curious if you were going to notice it when you watched the performance and I don’t think you did. But you have to give MNET credit for being able to make some drama out of almost nothing Though I will say, my personal favorite MNET survival show dramatic edit was Produce 101 season 1 when they replayed Kim Sohye’s line in the first stage performance of Wonder Girl’s “Irony”. She sang 2 words wrong so they replayed it like 3 times, played the original lyrics, zoomed in on several contestants and audience reaction, had an entire flashback of her practicing for this performance only to mess up during the performance, then her sighing in defeat during the post performance interview AND THEN they played “My Heart Will Go On” as backgound music. Like it was some titanic sinking level of a mistake. It was the best tragic story over singing the wrong lyrics.

Secretninja312 (Tina)

You should definitely check out the Back Door K-team Studio Choom later if you have the time! They have a behind the scenes for it too, it's pretty fun to watch!

Park Hanbin from Hot Sauce K Team is in EVNNE now, and center Jihoo (the one with the big puffer jacket) actually ended up debuting with him, after WakeOne pulled him off the random subsidiary he was in and signed him not long after the show. I was so happy when it happened because these 2 made the Hot Sauce performance really enjoyable to me, they had good chemistry as performers from the start. A thing to know about foreigners in Mnet's Produce/Planet franchise: they've always been treated as a joke and food for bad edits, and it started in 2018 with Produce 48. It featured Korean trainees along with AKB48 members, who were already active idols in Japan (some for more than 10 years even). AKB's concept is "idols who grow in front of their fans" and is centered on fanservice, so they don't get trained and don't make their performances as polished as Korean groups. So when they went to the show, they were immediately criticized for their lack of training, on top of many of them struggling to understand a word of Korean and not even knowing they were going to the show in the first place (!). It was truly painful to see. Jokes on Mnet though, they all had so much personality and were such hard workers that many improved like crazy and went really far in the show. Then when Girls Planet 999 happened in 2021, they did a 33 Korean / 33 Japanese / 33 Chinese girls concept and since a lot of foreigners were actually decent performers, they just didn't show much of the Japanese ones and showed the confidence of the Chinese girls as pure cockiness. This is why, in Boys Planet, some global trainees like Zhang Hao literally monitored every word that left their mouths. All this to say that Mnet doesn't really care about the global trainees' lack of training and wouldn't teach them the basics before getting them on the show. They are there with their popcorn waiting for them to mess up for any reason, whether it is the language barrier or their discovery of the training system... I'm worried about what will happen with Boys Planet II since they want to debut an entire team of foreign boys. I just hope they'll be as well prepared as many were in Boys Planet. To finish, I just wanna comment on Mihawk criticizing ZB1's Han Yujin from Back Door K Team every time he can. Yujin was not even 16 back then and from the moment Choi Youngjoon told Mihawk "that kid dances like you", it felt like it was over for him. I don't know if it came from too much expectation, or if Mihawk is a bitter person and the comment didn't sit right with him, but the way he kept talking to him was too much. He gave him no useful criticism (at least, from what was aired) and just kept bashing him for the smallest stuff. Yujin really seemed to lose a lot of his confidence for the whole first half of the show but fortunately, things will go better for him in the next episodes. As usual, thank you so much for the video!

Lumos

One thing that I really like with Boys Planet is this overall feeling that the trainees are really so supportive of each other. Like they cheer so much for everyone (regardless of K or G) and are really nice and supportive towards the ones that have a hard time. There is obviously some tensions in the teams here and there, some communications issues etc.. And Mnet will milk every little moment they have, because these contestants really didn't gave them much x) But at least I'm glad they also show a lot of really nice, or funny moments. Also about when we were on Hot Sauce team K and you were talking about teaching them the fundamentals. Like yes that would be amazing, but they only have one week to master the song (it's really short in comparison of Universe League for example). Some of them, including Do Ha (the trainee Hanbin was teaching at this moment), have never danced before so I think they just didn't have the time, and indeed were just trying to look the cleanest possible. For the overall winning team being Back Door K team, personally I agree. And tbh if we could feel that much energy trough the camera, I can't imagine for the people that were actually there. So it's really not surprising for me that the live audience picked that team. Once again really enjoyed watching your video, and can't wait for next week ! :D
