[BOYS PLANET] EPISODE 9/10

Comments

Loved watching your reactions to the stages! Appreciated all your commentary as always and I just wanted to add a couple of extra thoughts to the discussion regarding the Matthew thing as well as! Maybe it’s just me but I feel like one of the reasons why Matthew had such a hard time as he did was because of his language abilities. He’s a lot more articulate in English whereas his Korean sounds more cutesy. It’s usually not a big deal but in situations where he needed to be more assertive and firm, his vocabulary limits the way he can “fight back” and express his thoughts. It was honestly quite hard for me to get through that portion of the episode and the fact that it didn’t really conclude nicely made me feel unsatisfied. This is also a personal opinion but I feel like because of the way he speaks in Korean, he can be more prone to infantilisation or at the very least, being seen as not as capable during the show. In comparison, Zhang Hao’s Korean had improved so much throughout the show. I truly believe that language is power and although he still wasn’t 100% fluent at that time, him being able to communicate his thoughts and feelings with simple yet effective vocabulary allowed him to appear more capable and in my opinion, more likeable to audiences. Although Ricky was also not super fluent in Korean, I think his English skills (eg. Young and Rich, Tall and Handsome~) was what made him likeable and could likely been a big factor in his popularity on the international side when the show started (and even till now). Had he not known English, I genuinely doubt he would have been in the group. P.S. I feel gutted for Jay’s score but from what I know, the live audience is also slightly manipulated by Mnet. To partcipate, people had to submit a form and there was a question which asked for people’s favourite trainee. I suspect it was likely to avoid too much of one trainee’s fans from being there, but I feel they could also have used the data for more nefarious reasons.

My thoughts on Matthew: As someone who is mostly indifferent to the bp trainees (apart from a few exceptions and respecting them as human beings and appreciating them as entertainers) I really dont understand the hate Matthew got. Yes, its a group performance but if im honest if that situation lowered my opinion of anyone its Han Bin. The performance is 1 thing but Matthew was supposed to be your friend. He talked quite harshly and than always tries to guilt Matthew into behaviour he deems good for the team. "Oh, you shouldnt think of it as us taking your part away, it would be better if you were happy about it", "Oh Matthew honey, I know you look like you wanne go throw up somewhere but we have an evaluation in an hour so lets practice once" (as if thats gonna do anything, yall put him into this situation where hes an emotional mess AND doesnt know his part right before the evaluation, what is practicing once gonna do? He cant even focus. Sidenot: I had a physical reaction when Han Bin touched Matthew while he was still mad. That is the absolute last thing Id want). Also the teacher telling him to fake smile, what? Isnt it like a week until the performance? Does he seriously think Matthew would still feel the same or act the same a week from that day? That was so unnecessary. Let the boy be in his feelings for a day, he can smile tomorrow. Also, maybe it cause Im petty but I understand the feelings Matthew described very well. The feeling of betrayal, worse because its not just team mates but your supposed friend and the feeling that that betrayal might have destroyed the friendship (I feel like thats what he was alluding to at the end of ep 9), the pain and anger, at the others but also yourself because you feel not good enough and all that mixing. Of course hed need a day. Completely understandable. Last point: I would have loved to see an apology from Han Bin, even if it was the right decision, you still apologize. 2 other team members could, was it just not shown or did it never happen? For the record, no I dont hate Han Bin, I just dont particularly like his behaviour during this arc. Like from A-Z. Basically everything rubbed me the wrong way. Edit: most reactors Ive seen (ok, basically all) cheer and are happy when Matthew finally fake smiles during the training. I really dont get why. Its an awful situation for him to be in and he obviously wasnt ok afterwards. I really appreciate that the one guy went and talked to him in the evening. I really like that you hated that situation for him and understood.

Ok, I have a lot of thoughts on the Matthew situation, let me just comment here real quick about Han Bin and Keita. Keita being down is completely understandable but from the perspective as a supporter its very frustrating. He was always nr 8. Always. Rock solid. And he didnt make it in the end. Why? I think him taking such a small part in switch played a part.If youre not looking for him he can get lost in the performance due to his small part. I understand the gut punch I understand his insecurities but even as someone who really has no idea I can see how insanely talented and more importantly capable he is. And theres loads of reasons for how the over me team might have voted and I honestly think in a perfect situation Keita would have fit switch better, so I just wish he hadnt shot himself in the foot. Its just heartbreaking to see. Because I want him to achive his dreams. But the silver lining is the Han Bin Keita interaction which is all the sweeter when you know that they are now in Evnne together, it is so nice to see. You can see them both as kind and positive people who will work great together in the future.

Since many people have talked about the SMN team's conflict in various ways, I'm going to add a little bit. Although overlooked by many, it was captioned that discussions about changing parts began four hours before Matthew met trainer (Choi Young-joon). In other words, he suddenly changed parts and was in a situation where he had to get used to it within four hours. As mentioned in the episode, the biggest reason was that even though there was an opportunity to adjust the part after the reorganization of the members (like the process of the Over Me team), the failure to do so was probably the biggest reason. The conflict, which aired over three long episodes, was actually resolved in less than six hours rather than a day, but the production team, which needed a bigger drama, inflated it to the fullest extent possible. As this conflict took up most of the SMN team's process, Matthew was infamously stigmatized as 'he is a PD-PICK so he ate up the whole episode'... even though the episode wasn't actually about to have a good influence on his ranking. Anyway, SMN team was very successful in their performance and unfortunately, they didn't finish first by just 9 points, but I think they finished well. I can say it lightly now, but at that time, there was such a huge flow of hate that Twitter trends and related search terms with serious negative words next to his name came out every day (both Korean and English...!). It was a really transitional period, and I'm just proud of him and his fans for holding out and winning debuts...🥹

Long comment im sorry Unlike the other performances, we actually know the order of them this time since on YouTube, they showed a full-cam of the other teams’ reactions to the performance. The official order went Supercharger -> Switch -> Over Me -> Say My Name -> En Garde. The teams were prepping/setting up for their performance one song before theirs, so Switch team is backstage reacting to Supercharger’s performance and so on; you see Over me team backstage during Switch’s performance, etc. All 4 teams are present in the back room thing for En Garde since it’s the last song. Supercharger had such a good storyline and everyone did so well with the time crunch they had. I remember being SO proud of Haruto. Takuto getting last is not surprising, a lot of fans stopped voting for him due to the fewer number of votes we got. He was very popular in Japan and his cute maknae image carried him for a long time. Korea seems to love the golden maknae storyline, for example, Yujin. A lot of Western sentiment was that he didn’t have the skills necessary to get as far as he has. He had a solo fanmeet after Boys Planet and every seat was filled in this giant theater. For Switch, I remember feeling like Jongwoo and Keita wanted to fade in the background since they got kicked out and it affected their confidence, which sucks since they do really well here. Shuai Bo getting last in live votes is directly cause of the Ep 7 shenanigans, and as I've said before, the damage is done and Mnet don't have to show him anymore since people will just stop voting for him. Same thing happened to Daeul in how he was edited in mission 1, which resulted in him getting low votes in his mission 2 performance, as he got last there. Hanbin got first AGAIN, it was very clear that he was a favorite by Mnet but the votes weren’t matching yet. It’s pretty clear to me that they wanted Park Hanbin in the final group, and in the rigging-votes Mnet era, he would have made this group. Fun fact, I’ve seen online in some spaces that some people didn’t know that Park Hanbin and Sung Hanbin were different people, so they were voting for Sung Hanbin thinking it was Park Hanbin. I hope it wasn’t enough of a gap where it affected his rankings though. Ah yes, the finale of the weird Matthew edit. The show frames it like Hanbin was the one who was thinking it first, but in the moment, Jiwoong is the one that brings it up and Hanbin corroborates that. A big thing was the show seemingly tried to frame it as Matthew vs Hanbin. I saw some viewers feel unsatisfied by the ending of the little saga because they thought Hanbin should have been there in some form when the reconciliation/apology happened. The worst part imo, is that this lasted like a day MAX, but Mnet stretched this out for 3 weeks, sowing the seeds of discourse in episode 8. I think they wanted a big emotional payoff where they overcome their differences and get closer as a result but they really missed the mark here, and this really only hurt Matthew following the next elimination, and made people worried if it was enough to get him kicked out of top 9 come finale night. Either way, they all do so good. I LOVE Matthew in this performance, his facial acting is perfect for this song. The nametag thing is where you give your nametag to someone you like and it’s like a confession. I think school couples will swap them or add them to their uniform and all that. Over Me winning was definitely a surprise, but well deserved. Say my Name having 4 top 9 people made them the clear favorites to win, but they all do so well. It’s unfortunate to see Jay get last though. There are a couple G-trainees who are not popular in Korea but are popular internationally: Jay, Keita, Wang Zihao, Haruto just to name a few. For example, Jay and Keita are usually top 5 for global votes (I think Keita actually placed first in global votes at one point), but their Korean votes are so low it doesn’t guarantee them a place in top 9. I don’t think they mention it but Zhang Hao has placed first for every mission as well as Park Hanbin. He got the highest score in Kill this Love, and placed first in Tomboy and Over Me. The only thing he ‘lost’ was signal song center to Hanbin. Prep yourself, we’re in the endgame now lol, this next elimination is gut-wrenching.

i finally had time to watch it and omg i'm looking at this with fresh eyes now compared to when it first aired! mnet really squeezed all the drama they could out of the say my name team because hanbin mentioned really recently that matthew has a super healthy mindset and that they've never fought with each other before. even if matthew gets mad/upset about something he just sulks about it and the longest it's ever taken him to get over it was a day

Boys planet was rough while it was airing... I have never seen something online as crazy as that... and I have seen a couple of survival shows by now. There is something that needs to be understood and it's that live voting during these performances was done mostly by Koreans and their standards. The amount of hate some of these trainees received was insane... it made me realize people are evil. People hated on some of these trainees looks and personalities so much. You can see people like Jay losing confidence throughout the show. (Because of the amount of hate he was getting... it's crazy he still gets till this day, his haters are obsessed with him) Also, Jay's vocals in Over Me are Everything!! These 28, in fact, so many of the boys in the show, are so so talented. Even people like Takuto improved so much. I really don't understand how people can spend so much energy hating... when they are all so talented... so sad. Feel Special stage was aired right before the previous elimination, people felt so bad for Woongki, that's why he was saved and Shuaibo started getting hate. Boys Planet is a truly special show! ❤ I hope everyone continue to support all groups coming out from the show!

Sitting on a cornflake

Hi ! You were right for Shuaibo, the episode with "Feel Special" was already there before this episode recording, so him getting the least votes out of everyone was definitely mostly because of that. People were not happy with what happened and they showed it here. And I think he was expecting it, seeing his reaction, he was not surprised ^^' You are also right about the fact that the three teams that ranked 1-3 were almost sure to get there because of 1) the popularity of the trainees and 2) the songs and choreos that were better and that they could get thanks to their rankings. Then what really decided the rank between the three was also the concept I think. Sexy concepts often do better in survival shows, especially with the live audience. My personal ranking would be 1) En Garde! 2) Say My Name 3) Over Me 4) SuperCharger 5) Switch I'm really proud of the Supercharger team for what they've done, and yep Wang Zihao killed this stage (and all the other ones, it's sad that he didn't get any screen time during the entire show) Also, I seriously love your reactions so much, because you genuinely enjoy every moment so it's makes it so fun for us to watch. And also agree about the musical being the best side quest, it was so fun but still music skills so also very interesting, and Hanbin and Hao need to calm down, they are way too good x) Can't wait for next episode and then the finale ! :D

Indeed, the Shuaibo/Woongki situation + the elimination episode were broadcast before the recording of this mission happened (I checked the date to make sure and the performances were filmed 2 days after the 2nd elimination). I do think Shuaibo did way less good than the rest of his team but yeah, not to the point of deserving such a low score. What happened with the Feel Special team definitely impacted his results. Seems like Jay also got his own score impacted by external drama. Poor dude literally did nothing wrong, it's just that individual fandoms were fighting on social networks and it took a toll on his live voting. The fact he's not Korean unfortunately made things even worse. I think the escalation in the arguments in both Say My Name and then in Over Me (that one was less dramatic, but still) also stirred from the fact that the members involved were best friends. Matthew and Hanbin is one thing we all knew of, but Chen Kuanjui and Zhang Hao were another pair of besties, even though it was not mentioned at all on camera (Kuanjui trained in Yuehua with Hao before he left the company, and they have remained very close since then). Working with your friend can be such a double-edged sword: it can be harder to tell your friend that something they're doing isn't quite right, and valid criticism/decisions can be taken more personally by the person on the receiving end. Of course they also had other problems going on and other people were involved, but I'll forever feel like them being so close definitely made things worse. Those 4 were all in my personal top 5 so I remember wanting to scream when the episodes aired. I was glad when tensions finally calmed down and they gave performances they can be proud of. As always, thank you for your video!

Man, I remember when this came out and over me came in first. It was actually a huge upset because of what you mentioned with say my name/en garde having some higher ranked members while over me had 4/5 global members on their team and as a whole, weren’t ranked as high up with the exception of Hao. Like, over me is still my favorite but I really thought say my name was going to take it with their members and bright/refreshing songs do really well in Korea, or en garde for how powerful and high energy it was plus gyuvin/gunwook/hui for rankings. At this point Hao was the only one I thought might debut from over me (keep in mind that Ricky has never ranked top 9 in the eliminations yet and has had little screen time compared to some of the others), so I was so thrilled that all these other trainees were going to get some benefits and another stage because I was really rooting for him/rui/jay from day 1. Jay getting such a low score for over me still hurts my heart tbh, things online weren’t going well for him and apparently you couldn’t hear much over the crowd’s screams, but everyone did so well in this challenge and his vocals were impeccable! And yeah I don’t remember the dates anymore but I think you’re on the money for what happened to shuaibo’s votes because even in the dance practice you could see how well he was doing, he’s always gotten a lot of votes for his stage presence until now 🥲
