QUEENDOM 2 (퀸덤2) CHALLENGE 1 ANALYSIS

Comments

This is a great perspective and can totally understand why based on your reasoning! I think this is a very fascinating thing that will be fun to dive into later whenever Ace of Ace gets released! Very much looking forward to the discussions there!

Jessica Holyfield

i will say i think alot of groups dont really change up the songs in the first round each season because its SUPPOSED to be recognizable songs from each group so the audience can be like "OH thats who this is? Wow maybe ill actually keep up with this show" so they try to KEEP it recognizable yknow?

luviemoo

SAMEEEEE

Jessica Holyfield

For sure! It sucks when it feels like off-stage limitations are holding ANYBODY back, especially when you can tell they can do so much more! And I would love confirmation about this LED/graphics situation, and if it changed with the new location! A later WJSN stage absolutely uses lighting effects to the FULLEST! I’ll be checking out your reaction to challenge 2 here soon!

Shelby Moore

BOOOO.... I don't like it when people take things too far like that... Leave a sour taste in my mouth.... It's no team to blame but Mnet truly should have followed through and given LOONA points for participating at least.... Follow through is a big thing for me so it bothers me when I see those who should DON'T...

Jessica Holyfield

Thank you for your perspective here! It was a great help for me looking into the next challenge! I feel with a lot of my notes, it has nothing to do with the groups but everything to do with the rest of the team and production.... I also think they may have just had one guy running those LEDS.. Everyone gets a big BLESS IT on this haha!

Jessica Holyfield

Yeah it definitely makes me sad to see how much vitriol came between the two fandoms, some saying starship paid mnet for WJSN’s win 😭 there’s still a commenter who leaves hate on every comment celebrating WJSN under their performance stages… It absolutely wasn’t fair to LOONA but it really sucks that some felt they should take that out of WJSN when all they did was compete! Especially when you know these girls all have a good relationship in real life and really respect one another- I really think this stuff gets so much worse with girl groups 😔

Shelby Moore

I think with kep1er if the team working with them committed with leds and structure, I do think it would have been better! I’m excited to see their growth in the show!

Jessica Holyfield

Viviz was top spot for me for very similar reasons! The fact I was able to pick up on their ending just from one MV watch shows the power of their love for their fans and the presence their choreo has!

Jessica Holyfield

I can totally see this! I know I’m operating from the fixed cam lens so I may be feeling differently (or the same 😂) about Hyolyn’s stage, but I’m so excited to see these camera op stages with all the vibes! I can see why you voted her first!

Jessica Holyfield

I am here for ALL OF IT KEVIN! You gotta be helping this sista out!

Jessica Holyfield

kepler i liked the racing concept! i do think theres too much overlap and similarities and they continue their space theme which (wjsn/loona also have in their music) so it makes it hard to stand out especially with how good they incorporate it into their identity. i liked the musical staccato they added to the chorus and the new additional choreo as well. xiaoting hikaru and dayeon stand out alot for me but the overall team lacks the stage experience to me i think.

Kevin

Viviz I dont have much to say about them i think they nailed the stage it was very memorable and whew those nostalgia points. it was such a nice a fun stage and i loved their alice in wonderland concept as well. when i voted i gave them my second vote

Kevin

ok starting with the aired performances. 1. For Hyolyn the number one thing i think for me that i may disagree with is the fire bc in my interpretation of it was more of a bonfire/campfire moment. bc in the aired stage with the moving cam it felt like such a tropical party and such a fun vibe. (also her saying welcome to paradise was a reference to her solo debut where her song paradise was tropical themed) i personally gave her my number 1 vote on the livestream zoom call lol. 2. this is going to be mentioned in the episode i think but her heel broke before the performance and she had like super glue it or use a different pair of shoes or something so that might be why she may have been off balance sometimes. 3. and regarding the sistar stuff. touch my body was a while into their career and they were all grown and had already established themselves as the “summer” and “sexy” queens of gen 2. and i dont recall any of them voicing for a different concept in my years as a star1.

Kevin

Okayyyyyy so you know im going to have a lot to say about this lmfaoo but ill do it in sections so its not a jumble of words. ill start with Loona bc… those are my girls. 1. the concept change was really the most evident as you also pointed out bc the original was very bollywood based and while that sound wasnt taken out they did add in lots of traditional korean elements down to the instruments the hanboks many moves in the choreo that were changed as well as well as props. 2. as you noticed this was actually a different stage (round 2’s stage). loona performed this a day or two before round two live performances which means that, not only did they have to rechoreograph the original performance while sick to fit a new stage and reach the deadline, they actually were practicing and choreographing round 2’s performances at the exact same time (which when u get there youll see why this was ALOT of work). and ofc u know they were getting mistreated by their company along the way too so that was in no way making any of this better. 3. i dont want to beat a dead dog either but cmon… 0 points for this performance? all i can say is that when it comes to the final episode? this may or may not be relevant.

Kevin

That doesn’t shock me at all and makes my heart hurt about it. Also shows that the company didn’t do as much to help advocate either which verified more of the internal issues at hand… also very happy that they are in a better place as well!!

Jessica Holyfield

Goodness. Firstly I’m glad I wasn’t reading too much into it and was observing more on the accurate side. I’m happy they got what they wanted but I wish it was the original concept to begin with….. goodness these groups didn’t deserve this type of micro control 😭 because I also heard that there were injuries that happened as a result of that original concept as well!

Jessica Holyfield

Gosh to be around the kpop scene during this was absolutely insane people were absolutely heated for how mnet treated loona since this was the time they still got mistreated/abused from their company bbc. Seeing how far they've come now is so heartwarming but gosh mnet is just something else

Zay

brave girls themselves completely agreed with you on the sexy concept not matching the song, they always wanted the song to have the summer concept and they finally got their wish with their summer remix of rollin that was released in 2018 I think

egaymer

I was so sad to hear this… especially having a gut feeling that their routine was going to be AWESOME… this does make me excited to see their future stages and I’m happy that they were all able to make a recovery!

Jessica Holyfield

This all makes so much sense. I was feeling this way a smidge with TO1 from RTK because they were in a similar boat right? with just coming off of a survival show themselves. Luckily I think with this new season of RTK2 we don’t have this problem as much which is good I think! Very unfortunate that they were placed in the position they were in because that definitely affects everything moving forward and no relief from stress is TOUGH. I know it will get better as the episodes go on like all the other seasons I’ve experienced but I appreciate you guys informing me as always about the other logistics that factor into what’s being shown! Always appreciated!!

Jessica Holyfield

Yeah, I remember there was a lot of discussion about favouritism towards Kep1er because at the time they were basically like Mnet's daughters . Yeah I agree with the fandoms being really nasty towards each other especially between WJSN and Loona because their concepts are so similar and then also the editing really didn't help.

TeenyTinySophie

1100% agree, plus I wonder if mnet was worried about appearing like they were showing favoritism, so they didn't support them as much in some of their stages? Especially this first one it seems like they held back a lot from the group, like, they've been doing these shows for years now, they know the precedent they set! I just wish they could have enjoyed a regular comeback circuit instead of having to go from one competition show to another. I honestly think it hurt their momentum far more than anything else especially with how nasty fandoms got with each other while Q2 was airing...

Shelby Moore

oof, im sorry to see your disappointment in a lot of these stages! I think it shows my sensibilities when it comes to girl groups how much I liked them but I do absolutely see the issues you've pointed out! Originally I of course saw the filmed versions ahead of the full stages but that makes this perspective all the more important because every online fan had a very different experience to those who were in the room that day! I will say viviz's concept takes it for me for 1st, because it was such a love letter to their time in Gfriend and I think their concept and staging were really strong! The thing I wanted to mention about kep1ler's concept though is that they already have a lot of space theming, so I actually think they should have taken all the spacey LED's out and really committed to the racetrack concept! they should have started with big flags, included the dancers more, and really sold it with checkered flare and even maybe having the girls actually run somewhere onstage (a novel concept for girl groups I know) I do think its awful that loona got no points for this, and I am by no means saying that they had an unfair advantage here (literally the opposite, but I can see why the points were tough) but I don't know if you noticed that they actually performed on a completely different stage to the rest of challenge 1. this is because they were only able to film their set very close to the challenge 2 performance date ( I think like 2 days before?) all this to say they other groups did not have access to those other stages yet, just to clarify. I still totally believe they would have had these sections on the original stage just placed differently. on the bright side! this is a sneak peak to the stage for the next challenges, and if my memory serves me correctly groups will be using them. I think an unfortunate thing about this challenge is that the groups did all have very similar structures and aesthetics to their performances. I don't know if there was 1 guy running LED's for everyone or there were preset visuals that they all could pick from to pad things out, or if its just the fact that more than one group has a space theme in their concept (kep1er being formed from girls planet, WJSN's English title being Cosmic girls, and even Loona's concept though they switched it up more effectively) all this to say I think there were some wakeup calls here not just about competing on queendom but also making everyone aware of who it is they are competing with and how they need to lean into stronger concepts in the future! I think there is tons of improvement had throughout the show, which I personally love to see, so I'm looking forward to your reaction to the rest!

Shelby Moore

loona really did deserve first for this performance and it reallly is a shame they didn't get a fair shot.

Nigelsplace

Also Loona performed on a different stage setup because they didn't perform the first mission the same day as the other groups because of Covid so they performed it before their second mission performance, which is why they use the sides. If you notice the other performances had stairs on the left going up towards another level area but Loona didn't have that so they had to improvise.

TeenyTinySophie

There was a lot of discourse about Kep1er's WADADA choregraphy, both the original and the Queendom 2 version. My absolute favourite choreo by Kep1er is MVSK I highly recommend watching it, even in your free time (the song also slaps). If I'm being honest I feel like Kep1er got the short end of the stick in Queendom 2, they had only debuted 3 months prior and were rookie rookies (they hadn't even had their first comeback) unlike Viviz who even though technically debuted around the same time as Kep1er they had so much experience with Gfriend and it really shows throughout the show. I don't think Kep1er had built their confidence as a group yet when they joined the show and I'm not entirely sure if/how much the show increased that confidence, but they seemed really exhausted by the end. Also no one was expecting Kep1er to be part of the line up
