[로드 투 킹덤 : ACE OF ACE] CHALLENGE 2 ANALYSIS - EPISODE 4

This is SUCH a great point! I felt that the audience and members of other teams are getting different shots which to me I find interesting since both are factors on scoring… wouldn’t you assume that teams should see the same angle that the audience does for the sake of consistency? But I don’t mind that we get all these different versions of these choreos to enjoy which means more potential success of seeing what the intention of the routine was for (like you mentioned about the light around the piano! ) I am hoping that teams who are focusing more on camera figure out a hybrid soon because the less teams competing, the more likely that can affect scoring for future challenges!! Thank you for sharing such great info all the time!!! I know I and MANY others appreciate it!!

Your comment was the most needed thing yesterday when I went to watch the episode. The fact you took the time to stay through the highs and lows of how I made you feel emotionally with a group you deeply care about, is one of the most humbling things ever and is one of the main components that I really want to always be a good steward of when I watch any music artist material. I know there is such a wide range of fans within any fandom, with their own advocacies regarding their groups that I am slowly learning, and it’s people like you that make me feel like I can be a positive contributor to the space in ways that are genuinely helpful for people. For that I thank you 😭♥️

I think cravity's crew are prioritizing making an impact on the online audiece rather than making it better visually to the x amount of people on-site that are going to vote. I understand that's important too, but considering mnet is only doing 1 take of everything they should balance it more to make it a better experience to both parts :/

oh wow no one ever mentioned that it was a mistranslation thank you for clarifying and yes sorry I forgot to put the credit

I am always grateful for your professional opinion because I feel like I don’t pay a lot of attention on these things so I learn a lot. I appreciate all types of comments may it be praise or criticism. I personally felt very emotional watching the performance that I don’t even feel able to have an objective opinion about it. It felt like I went on a journey although I didn’t understand all story elements while watching.

Oh, that was a mistranslation btw. Starship's english translations on their videos tends to be pretty horrible and has a lot of inaccuracies. Them saying that they felt like Evershine would be their last album was a mistranslation. What they actually said was that, because they debuted during the start of Covid, they felt like every album they released could be their last album, especially because they heard similar sentiments from some Starship staff :/ Also, as a translator… I would personally prefer you give credit when you mention something someone else has translated. It helps keep us accountable if we ever mistranslate anything if people know who the translation is coming from.

So I want to add to the previous comment what hyeongjun said and i quote: “right we have been told that the part the color shifted when the petals fall was so beautiful. we really love that too. it’s kind of sad story but one of the reasons we participated in Road to Kingdom was bcs we felt like cravity didn’t really have its own color. we kept wondering, ‘what does cravity truly represent? what is our true identity?’ we struggled with that for a while. and we tried to reflect that through love or die (performance). that’s why at the beginning it might have seemed like there wasn’t much color. it’s about us finding our color, symbolized by light, and as we move forward, it’s like we’re finally discovering and embracing our own identity.” (@hyeongjun on twitter) Just for context this color/identity is a huge topic for Cravity. Just before RTK they revealed that they felt like LoD is their last album (this part is a mistranslation!) and how they are still struggling with their identity.

--My thoughts-- One thing I realized during around episode 3 is that the other groups and the live audience actually have different points of view. While the live audience can see the entire stage and so their POV is closer to the full cam, the groups are watching through the cameras so their POV is closer to the full versions of the performances. The reason why I wanted to point this out was because I think Cravity's director is following the previous RTK and the Kingdom format where there was so live audience. It really feels like they place more importance on the camerawork compared to the live audience. People have made comparisons to TBZ in Cravity's performances and I think a large part of that is how TBZ really popularized the camerawork-heavy performances in the franchise. There are many portions in Cravity's Love or Die that the audience can't really see from the full cam perspective. I think your sentiments regarding the bridge (piano) portion and the ending reflect what the audience probably felt while watching. I did see some comments from the audience during the day of filming and many mentioned how they really couldn't grasp much of the piano portion because it was quite far. The audiences on the left and right probably didn't really even see it because of the staircase blocking the way… With audience votes being 70% and groups' votes being 30%, I'm not really sure if their strategy is going to keep paying off. Anyway, to explain more on the piano and ending scene since I think you've watched the episode, there is a light flitting around the piano that they're trying to grasp. In the end, they run out and Jungmo is holding the light. This is when the flower staircase and flower shower are revealed, as well as the colours intensifying. Along with Taeyoung (black hair ace) and Minhee (blonde hair ace) gesturing towards the light at the end, this symbolizes that they've achieved their goal. I unfortunately think it didn't come through that well on the full version either and I have the feeling that it'll be much more readable in their dance practice. Especially the piano portion since the members said that they were controlling the light that was supposed to shine on the piano but you could only really see it during a tiny bit of that portion :/

--Context behind the performance-- The Cravity members have mentioned that the story behind their Love or Die performance was closely related to their story as Cravity. One of the members (Serim) started crying as soon as they went off-stage and another member (Wonjin) started crying during the last chorus. Wonjin also cried during the same part when they were performing Love or Die during their fan con. I'll just word-for-word translate how Wonjin explained the story: "We chased after the light (our goal) and ended up falling down from a cliff. We were trapped inside the cube but broke out from it little by little. At first, it was our hands, then our upper bodies, and then we broke through with our entire bodies after gaining strength and courage. Through music (the piano), we (the members) all met each other. Then, we were able to find the light (our goal) through meeting Luvitys. That's why the place we thought of as a cliff (in the beginning) was actually full of flowers." Him and other members have also said that the cube is also representative of their debut, Break All The Rules, which had a lot of cube imagery. I personally don't fully understand the story and how it connects to their previous stages but I still appreciate that the members were able to share their story with us. It really means a lot considering, outside of filming, the members have all said that their reason for joining the show is to be able to grow as idols and performers and to be able to repay Luvity for our efforts in supporting them.

Long explanations about Cravity's performance again in the replies to this but first… I honestly think you should be able to talk about the concept because it's such an integral part of the performances, especially in a show formatted like this. I also agreed with your take last week. I didn't know either of the two movies but, like you, I think Cravity's performance was still readable without knowing while Oneus' unfortunately wasn't. I saw the comments on your YouTube video as well and I think people naturally just overreacted and became a bit defensive since it's hard to hear criticism for the groups you like. I know since I went through it with the whole TBZ-Mihawk-plagiarism thing and I felt defensive while watching your critiques. Ultimately, though, I understood after some time that you're going into these analyses without any bias against the groups and with the goal to give constructive feedback. I think a lot of the comments were made spur of the moment so I hope they don't make you continue to second guess the way you analyze the performances.
