haha I'm glad that through the frustration there was still laughter! I appreciate your thoughts and it never bothers me to get long comments! It's what I live for!

2025-04-09 08:45:35 +0000 UTCReading all the comments here and thinking Team Beat was being harsh. I watched this after Boys planet so this did not feel harsh compared to what I have watched in Boys Planet and especially Starlight Boys which I dropped midway. But I do agree some of the Team Beat comments from mentors were not necessary like "you are not worthy of the choreo", that was so out of pocket, almost like some of Baek Koo young's comments in Boys Planet though I really like him. Plus he said if you practice more, you will do better or you won't. I would say if you practice efficiently, you will do better. I remember an advice Jay Park gave in Peak Time that I really liked. He said "you have to practice efficiently and not just practice for 12 hours straight coz if you practice for 12 hrs over and over while making a mistake and not correcting it, you end up practicing the mistake, so efficiency is key". I really liked that advice. With El Capitxn, I understand since it's his song, he feels protective of it and wants whoever performs the song to do it well coz if the song made by a producer is not sung or performed properly, audience won't listen to it either or stream it, but saying he hates someone who ruins his song to a trainee's face not even a debuted idol is just outright harsh and that's something that's never been said even in Boys Planet or other surivival shows that I have watched. That would completely crush someone's confidence. But damn, watching you almost get tears in your eyes, I can feel your frustration since you are a teacher and you know what kind of words can really traumatize a student. And when I first saw it I was frustrated thinking why Jihun is not practicing and seems to have no motivation and kept thinking would he have made the mistake on stage if he diligently practiced or would he not have heard all the harsh criticism he got if he had practiced before evaluations but watching your reactions, hearing your analysis and also another reactor Jeff Avenue, I got a new perspective that Jihun might just have shut down and felt like if he practiced in front of others he would be criticised more and the Team Beat members were doing so, so that point is validated or as Jeff said that he might be thinking that he is making mistakes if he practices so if he doesn't practice he won't be make more mistakes and get criticised and so he would rather not do it. Hearing both of your opinions even I feel that he is the kind of person who just shuts down due to anxiety and a survival show is a high pressure environment and not everybody can handle it. I don't know if Team Beat members gave him feedback and he didn't work on it but they weren't hands on with him like Team Rhythm, how we saw JL properly teaching Juwon , sitting with him, one on one approach. Also it is a high pressure environment for the other trainees also and they were also concerned about their own parts and performances. This is where having a good leader helps who can delegate some responsiblities and check on members who are falling behind, provide some words of inspiration and motivation like we saw in Boys Planet Burn it Up K Team where the leader had a one on one conversation with the youngest member of the group. Team Beat lacked that and the teamwork. Changsub was my fav director coz he was a coach, gave great tips and we saw how the trainees applied them immediately and got it. Loved that.. I'll just leave it at that. I don't have anything else to say coz his session was perfect.. Ah I love him and BTOB! Ten and Yangyang gave great advice on how to work on teamwork and how to improve in areas they were lacking and how to practice, they weren't hands on coach like Changsub but gave great advices. Team Rhythm had a good leader in Steven who did not pull the age card or experience card or leader card and showed ego and was more of a mediator than a dictator type leader. Same with Kyungho of Team Groove who knew what his strengths were and even though he couldn't get the part he wanted, he knew he could teach everyone the choreo and also lead them since he is older and been in a group before, got experience and his professionalism showed. He also had no ego or pride or jealousy for not getting the part. he focused on his strengths which was dance and leadership and showed that, taught others, and was a good leader and teacher. But I must say after all this frustration you made laugh with your comment "Team beat for beating each other down for what I feels like". I cracked into laughter at that comment! 😅 And sorry for the long comment.

2025-04-08 20:00:15 +0000 UTCVery happy that we were able to watch this together! Regarding Beat, I know the situation could have been so much better, and there is always a chance that SBS did some evil editing to make it a more hostile environment than it was.... Happy that you are here getting to dive through it with me!

2025-02-06 23:50:50 +0000 UTCThe team beat situation is very frustrating to see. I do not like how the whole thing was handled. The mentors were too harsh and didn't give good advices to help. As someone who has been in a similar situation in group projects, I can tell that communication should be the top priority of any group projects. Some trainees seem to be egocentric, thinking they were better than the trainee who was beat down not only by the ones who should have supported him, but also by the production team on the show

2025-02-06 11:58:00 +0000 UTCI'm finally watching this show, first time seeing it with you is great. You have very great points during all that I've seen so far. I always agree with you lol ! Thanks for these great réactions

2025-02-06 10:31:24 +0000 UTChaha! I am so happy that I am able to be a different perspective while watching these shows! It's a tough thing to navigate and I agree with you to your point that they most likely gave feedback in other languages but did some in Korean for the bits. And I may continue to follow some survival shows so we can navigate the processes together! I already know Boys Planet II will be on our radars 😂☠️

2025-01-16 22:03:17 +0000 UTCOn the note of Ten and YangYang not giving feedback to JL and other foregin members in english, I think that was likely on the request of the show. Since its a Korean show, I think they wanted most of the talking on camera from the "Directors" to be in Korean. I'm sure they also gave feedback in different languages that just didn't get aired since Team Rhythm has mostly foreign members and both Ten & YangYang are fluent in several languages. Also Just wanted to say, I love your input on these episodes. I like how you point out what you like and don't like about training process, approach, etc that the trainees and directors take. You really do bring a different perspective since you have that choreography background and experience teaching so you understand how the learning/training process better than most Kpop fans and viewers of these shows. Like the whole Team Beat and Jihun situation. Every person I've seen react to it reacted the same way I did; thinking Jihun lacks motivation and is really bringing down the team. But your explanation about what could possibly be going on makes sense and changes the perspective that the show is definitely trying to paint. It does make sense that when you're surrounded by people who are good, its intimidating and for a teacher/mentor figure to say such harsh words could cause some people to lose the drive to even try. Yes, some people do thrive when backed in to a corner and pressured, but some do shut down. So could it be Jihun doesn't really care and lacks motivation? Yes. Could it be because he's just not confident and just mentally shut down? Also Yes. Honestly, what you said is now making me question every other survival show I've watched that has had similar scenarios play out. It's seems to be a common "storyline" these shows air. There almost always seems to be a trainee who's not focused, falling behind, who doesn't do well on stage and is fully blamed for their team's loss. And its unfortunate that means there's a trainee who ends up becoming the scapegoat for these storylines and receive criticism from viewers for it. It does get frustrating sometimes because no matter what actually happened in those practice rooms, the producers will clip and put together footage to create specific narratives they want. I guess We always have to remember that we're seeing only a few minutes of rehearsal package of what was probably 2 weeks of training. Annd on a lighter note; I love how much you love their fashion choices and how your reaction will go from explaining something about their dance to "oh! I love that Jacket!"

2025-01-16 20:59:23 +0000 UTCThank you so much for sharing this. I love the fact he is able to invest in this way. I know others would want to but it can be tricky to do so! Very proud of everyone so far and I'm hopeful for a redemptive Team Beat interaction with everyone!

2024-12-12 23:37:45 +0000 UTCI just want to add something about how passionate Changsub is to mentor his Groove team. It was reported in an article that he even gather Groove even outside filming days to have their continuous mentoring. Another note about that, when he was still planning for his own academy (which is Changggo, that building they are showing), he asked Eunkwang for advice, and Eunkwang told him to not do this if he's not 100% on it. Since them he really showed his 100% in mentoring aspiring artists, despite his busy schedule (he has a weekly variety show, nationwide variety shows and musical) he will make sure to find time for mentoring. A lot of UL watchers have no idea who btob is, let alone who changsub is, so he and his team gets under appreciated most of the time, so I am really happy to see that at least someone understands how much passion Changsub and his Team are putting into this. I totally agree with you about the editing, I've noticed that too so much, that the editing on Rhythm tends to be more positive and focuses on that, whereas, they tend to show the weaknesses of the other teams. But we never really know what's happening, what we can only comment on is what is being shown to us, this is why the power of editing is really crucial on this survival shows. I hope SBS doesn't go the MNET route because, no matter how I love Changsub and there trainees, I will drop this show if they focus on too much drama rather than showing the progress, mentorship, and improvement of these kids. I hope SBS don't waste the opportunity to showcase these trainees because is i'm being honest, they kinda hit a jackpot with their casting -- the trainees are great they have potential, and some are like just ready to debut here; they've got a good line up of mentors, Changsub being big in Korea, WayV being big globally, Yugyeom and El Captixn, more in hiphop rnb and producing. I really wish success for this show.

2024-12-05 07:03:13 +0000 UTCTv show platform manipulation is REAL, and it's unfortunate it seems like the people who get the short end of the stick, are the contestants when a lot of them are still very much teenagers.. I'm hopeful for some positive reinforcement on the Team Beat side and some rectified relationships with the first string team. We shall see!!!!

2024-12-04 14:39:42 +0000 UTCSOOO happy that you are accompanying me and watching together!!! Seems I have a "popcorn" buddy haha! I LOVE Lee Changsub's quote... That deserves to go on a tshirt haha! The comment you made about Mnet setting the bar 6 feet under made me LAUGH haha... I don't think I could have said it better myself ! REALLY excited for these upcoming performances!

2024-12-04 14:36:43 +0000 UTCLee Changsub is a GEM I tell you! He made me want to take up vocal lessons haha. Incredibly inspiring and I want to continue to be that for my own students... Goodness I hope that we get some good quality rectified vibes over on Beat... I want them to be seen as people who have to grow through tough things, but not at the expense of themselves... It's SBS though so who knows how they will choose to play it out... Wasn't a fan of Team Beat and I'm glad that we were able to work through some different angles with that situation! Praying it was a major SBS narrative ploy!

2024-12-04 14:35:01 +0000 UTCFantastic perspective here and I agree with your points! I'm hopeful to see some redemptive segments for next week with Team Beat and I hope that we are able to see some great performances! I am one that doesn't want groups to struggle but do their best .. Makes for a better competition that way!
Jessica Holyfield
2024-12-04 14:32:08 +0000 UTCYeah.. I'm used to Mnet which is good in cases like this, and I know that at the end of the day, SBS will do what works best for them to get viewers, so I agree with you that we can calibrate ourselves with the mentality of "we weren't there, so we won't 100% know". I'm hopeful to see some good interactions shown in the upcoming episodes!

2024-12-04 14:30:46 +0000 UTCGod finally someone understands the situation on the Team Beat because most of the audience comments I've heard that the reason that Team Beat loses is because of Jihun, most of them doesn't realize that if a person is struggling, frustrated, or showing no interest on practice as a group they should reach and have a converse to know why and what they can do to resolve the problem, maybe some words can make him change that someone can listen to him or there's someone he can reach to. On my observation I think Jihun doesn't believe on himself(like on the picking he was not believing that they picked him) it looks like he was overthinking like on his mind believing that he don't deserve the spot, their words stacks up his anxiety and later might be a depression I wish later on they'll have some emotional support towards their contestants/teammates.

2024-12-04 13:45:20 +0000 UTCIt seems like SBS just found a narrative for good tv and is willing to sacrifice the mentor’s commentary to change to the narrative they want. Need to take these clips with a grain of salt 🫤

2024-12-04 02:04:29 +0000 UTCSo glad I waited for your reaction before I watched this episode, as Team Beat's Directors choice of phrasing was certainly something. As a teacher, and considering that 4 of Beat's members were 18 and younger, was not vibing with their feedback. So, it was really nice to hear your perspective on things, and especially to keep in mind that SBS is framing the narrative to suit their needs and not necessarily to give an unbiased point of view. They're still better than MNET but that's just because the bar is 6 feet underground. I also really appreciated your take on the Missing You errors. A global viewer who doesn't know the song, might not even have noticed which I think speaks highly of Kyungho's professionalism. Which, honestly, hats off to him because messing up on THE Btob song in front of THE Lee Changsub has got to be rough. On the other hand, as a Melody and specifically a Minhyuk bias, I did hear the errors, and I'm certain that it probably jumped out to people who actually speak fluent Korean. However, there's also the fact that he's not a rapper, and I'm borrowing your word choice because I found it very fitting, grace should be given. Anyhow, Team Groove did very well. Proud of Changsub's kids, also proud of Changsub for being a good mentor. (Fun fact, Changsub once said that he'd rather discipline the kpop industry than discipline Sungjae (Btob's maknae) so it's nice to see him following through on that with his academy and now Universe League.) Moving on to Rhythm. They did great! They were very fun! I don't know enough about dance to be anything other than impressed with them. I'm curious to see how their Bench players will do, and if they also have fostered a good team dynamic. It's one thing for the 'aces' to get along, but how do the supposedly 'weaker' team players develop is what I'm wondering. Also very excited for Groove's bench player's performance. I'm fond of the song they are going to perform. XD Thank you as always for the reaction and analysis!

2024-12-03 23:19:31 +0000 UTCBest mentor for me is Lee Changsub because of the technicalities he teaches to the trainees. Team Rythm has the best Team Dynamics. As someone who coached people, not particularly in entertainment though, I was waiting for someone to address the issue in Team Beat, call it out and acknowledge it. I don't care if its the director or the trainees but no one did. Had someone ask what help he needed it would have been addressed however, none was willing to help. It only solidify my pov when there were two people practicing individually, yet again, he was left alone after a few minutes. He was being isolated for a reason that he can't catch up with the choreo because he don't know how to move his body the right way. For the trainees who are lacking Jihun (Beat) vs Jeongwoo (Groove) the difference between the two is the other one knows how to ask questions. It may just be personality differences or the environment they are in. Regarding Missing You about how critical the mistake is, this song is so popular in Korea. You can hear the fanchants too of the live audiences. So any wrong note, or missed beat may be noticable to many. The song is classic even though its a ballad it can beat a hardcore choreographed song. More so, it happened twice. I personally don't mind though I am a fan of the song. Now regarding the roles of the directors, mostly in survival shows, they will meet the choreographer, they will practice for some time, they will be given video of it then the trainees will be on their own to polish it. There will be mid-check or interim check, it can be a meet up or trainees will submit their video to them and then feedback will be given. I am also with you about JL. It fears me how much expectations they are asking from him. Good thing Park Juwon is now sharing this with JL and hopefully, more will be added.

2024-12-03 19:05:42 +0000 UTCI really enjoy Team Rhythm's teamwork. They take criticism and constructive feedback well, they accept help well and they give guidance to each other brilliantly. I appreciated how when someone needed help the others weren't super critical- they just stepped in and said "I will help you". I also appreciate that Steven could have tried to pull seniority given he is the eldest and leader but he never did- he was happy to take direction from those younger than him who were more qualified in particular areas. You also saw members working longer in the areas they lacked in- Steven and Daisuke doing extra dance lessons whilst being guided by Park Juwon and Park Juwon taking extra vocal lessons from JL. I was glad Ten gave them those last words about helping each other because it really did feel like they came together as a team and their performance really reflected that. Team Beat was a shambles on Team Work. If you're only critical of someone they will start to disassociate and I think that's what happened. I understand how frustrated the others were but if you only ever criticise someone that's hardly going to inspire them to try harder- you've just made them even more self conscious. They need to start remembering this is a Team competition. One or two talented members cannot carry a whole team and performances reflect the teamwork that's gone into them. They need to stop performing as individuals and start acting as a team. I found the whole Section of them all (including the "mentors") criticising Park Ji Hun without ever once offering him proper help quite upsetting. It seemed especially harsh coming straight after the great teamwork of Rhythm. Team Groove is pretty solid. They did a great job and I'm looking forward to seeing them grow more. Changsub is an amazing mentor for them and he also understands that you need to give positive feedback as well as constructive to help people grow. Then when he gives constructive feedback he backs it up by giving them tips and ways to fix the areas they are lacking in. He is actually being a coach and mentor! I was pretty sure he would be an amazing mentor and it makes me so happy to be proven right. Very excited to see the bench performances- especially Rhythm and Beats as a few of the players that caught my eye and weren't chosen ended up there.
