The Fallen Obelisk - behind the scenes [SPOILERS]

in the future you can expect me to post WIPs like these while I'm actually in the process of creating a piece, rather than after the fact. I just thought that my process for making this particular image was really fun and interesting! as you can see, the "sketch" was mostly a whole lot of 3D fakery - the "craters" aren't even on the surface of the Obelisk at all, they're just disc-shaped objects hovering in front of it. after I'd rendered out a decent foundation, I painted over every aspect in grayscale! I wasn't even originally going to color it, but I found it much easier to do so after the whole thing was "finished." 😂

a lot of people have pointed out the blood... and while it is definitely an Evangelion reference (in fact the whole image is loosely inspired by the fallen Black Moon at the end of Rebuild 3.0), I can confirm that yes, the Obelisks - while machine-like in nature - are in fact "alive." granted they haven't moved or done anything since the Roar seventy years prior. they're dormant, and this particular Obelisk may have been on the cusp of awakening.
