Thanks for replying on Columbo. I really think you need to watch it. I agree that in a way any show that has a cop as its central character is de facto copaganda. I also guess that my enjoyment of the show leads me to make excuses for it. But it is different than many cop shows. Columbo never carries a gun. In one episode, he has to do a test to renew his firearm certificate and from memory, he first tries to avoid it and then gets someone else to do the test for him. In this and other ways he's shown as different from other cops, working on his own and often against other cops when we get glimpses of them. It's not unusual for him to arrive at a crime scene and to be told to leave by a cop because his scruffy car and appearance mean they don't recognise him as one of them. Another difference between Columbo and the majority of other cop shows is that all the killers are white and rich (most are men). Columbo is one of the 99% and he is bringing members of the 1% to justice. It is their sense of entitlement and superiority that is their downfall in every single episode. The pleasure in watching is in seeing their feeling that they are above the law unravel in the face of Columbo's persistence and intelligence. Finally, my favourite episode is Death Lends a Hand which is one of the few instances I can think of in mainstream US pop culture that puts private services up against the public sector while depicting the former as both inefficient and corrupt.

Really interesting and thoughtful perspective on Korra! I totally agree with you that a lot of people's distaste for LOK came from the fact that the lead was a visibly brown, active/powerful woman, and the development of her bisexuality certainly didn't win the show points with these kinds of people (though it certainly won points with me!) On a more critical note, I did also really enjoy this series from leftuber Kay and Skittles about how the series handles its political themes, it provided some great food for thought https://youtu.be/ModX151Ipgs
