Something I remembered from watching the full length reaction, in this episode, the commercial break thingies say "All humans eventually die" and "When they die the place they go is nothingness." So I think that in this shows universe, there is normally no afterlife for humans, heaven and hell aren't real. Ryuk was probably trying to scare Light in episode 1 or, just as likely, he simply didn't know. There are theories though that Light was reincarnated as a Shinigami. You'd have to look into them yourself though, I'm not familiar with them.

2022-10-25 06:53:33 +0000 UTCI agree with your points about some of the best episodes being emotional, but not necessarily in a sad, crying sort of way. The music is often very mellow and somber and just gives you time to think about what’s happened. In the last episode you see Light run while images of him when he first started come to mind. We see the difference between a bright, eager kid who just wanted to get rid of evil from the world, who was warped and twisted over time until he became delusional and thought of himself as God, with control over life, and even regarded his fathers death as nothing more than a hitch in his plan. It’s clear he became twisted and maybe even “evil” but like you said the truth lies somewhere in the middle. Somewhere inside him was the teenager who just wanted to make the world a better place. I actually really enjoyed the ending. I like how it leaves things open to your interpretation and let’s you sit on your thoughts after it ends, instead of some typical “5 years later” sort of flash forward showing everyone getting on with their lives. It ends on a powerful moment and just let’s it linger, which I prefer. And yeah, I think the manga writer confirmed Misa kills herself but I like how it doesn’t need to confirm 100% and leaves it open to speculation. I’m glad you enjoyed it though!
