Here's a video playing both endings side by side, which I found very useful to see the visual differences. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50Yw4m6K0Cg. They were super creative in how they edited Sora out of the ending, the last scene of Shiro playing alone I think perfectly fits the downkey the audio does. There like 20+ references to other anime in NGNL. It's insane. The movie sort of goes into more of why losing your race piece is bad, but the 2 major theories that I could find with a bit of googling was that 1. all of Imanity becomes slaves (like Jibril is) or 2. the 10 pledges no longer applying to you means that someone can wage a conventional war (with murder and the like) and just murder you to extinction. It would also be questionable if you could even retaliate back. Either way, a defacto death sentence. I originally wanted to make a comment comparing "Who is Sora" to "Who is Rem", but I realized that I was mostly just talking about how much I disliked how they did the official translations for Re:Zero so I think I'll just post it on the Re:Zero episode when it comes. But I'll just say that I much prefer how NGNL did it.
