Re:Zero 2x01 Reaction

WHO THE HELL ARE THEY?!

Congrats on actually finishing Arc 3 (the end of this episode is where the light novel volume ends). Good theories in the intro, I'm not gonna comment on the particulars, since I have way more information then you, but they're very reasonable theories and I don't think theres anything already shown that contradicts them. The episodes are quite long. With consideration to the extra runtime (actual and from skipping OPs and EDs), there the equivalent of 7.5 extra episodes in Season 2. I'm not aware of any other anime that so consistently extended episodes and to that degree (There's like 3 minutes of ads in the last 12 episodes total). Some extra information about this episode. The first 3 minutes (Who is Rem) of this episode were added to the end of the Directors Cut, which was originally supposed to finish right as Season 2 started in 2020. But because of Covid, Season 2 premiered 6 months later, so people had to wait 6 months after getting the bomb "Who is Rem" dropped on them. They intentionally left this out of Season 1, since the production company didn't think Re:Zero would blow up like it did in 2016 and so when it ended, there just weren't any plans to make a Season 2 and it took a long time for it to get the resources to work on it (AoT had a similar thing I think). I 100% think it was the right call to not include this material in Season 1, because ending on such a big cliff hanger would of made people so angry. (10:20): Lackadaisical is a real fun word, though I think it's a bit too commonly used compared to the other archaic phrases she uses (though it's quite difficult to translate both meaning and archaicness at the same time). I certainly use it on occasion. lackadaisical just means "showing little enthusiasm and effort". (11:40): I think Subaru wants to be clear with Emilia and doesn't want to keep secrets like that from her. There's some cut content from Season 1 that I think also plays a role, but it isn't really all the important imo. (15:30): Man I love Regulas, the way how he twists everything he says back to himself, deflects onto Crusch and Rem and in general, his rantiness, just really hits it on the nail for such a narcissist. (18:15): I really loved how they depicted Subaru here, the panic and irrationality of his requests I think are really on point for someone who has just been hit with a ton of grief. (24:00): Some more background on why Felix wants to abandon the alliance. Felix doesn't necessarily think that they have to fight the Witch Cult to restore Crusch. This was cut in Season 1, but Felix is the strongest healer in the country. Remember that big explosion in the village in Episode 23, where Felix ended up wearing some cloth instead of clothes? Yeah, Felix died from that explosion. He's just so good at healing that he literally resurrected himself. As such, he'd rather try to reverse Crusch's memory loss himself then fight the Witch Cult (who have terrorizing the nation for a very long time). But yeah, it's not his decision to make. (28:30): Worth noting that Emilia keeps her eyes closed here while she embraces Subaru. A good compromise imo between Subaru's request to not look and to support him. (29:45): Yep Petalguese did say that there were 6 archbishops and thought that Subaru was Pride (since it wasn't filled). (30:40): I used to have this nice theory of why Subaru can remember Rem, but it got disproven later on in Season 2. (31:10): It's worth noting that even if Subaru went back to his previous savepoint (the Witch Cult strategy meeting), he would still be too late. Since the attack on Crusch and Rem happened right after they split up from Subaru and the others (Recall that half of the army and the injured were going back to the capital afterwards, and the others went with Subaru to fight the Witch Cult), and the Witch Cult strategy meeting happened right around that same time or a bit later. This also brings up a plot point that was never addressed in Season 1. The blank letter. Well, as you might guess now, the letter was blank because Rem penned the letter, and when she disappeared, so did her letter. Remember that Subaru has been in the world for like 2 months, and thus has only learned the written language at a basic level, so he didn't feel comfortable writing the words, so he asked Rem to write it for him. (31:20): Lye Batenkaitos (the archbishop of Gluttony) is male. Looking forward to the rest of your reactions!

I'm gonna put my Who is Rem rant here. Basically I really hate how they translated this scene, and I think No Game No Life did it way better. The big issue is that they flip the order of the sentence. It's clear that Emilia leads with "Rem", and by matching that spoken word with "Who" it's immediately clear what the sentence is, "Who is Rem?". A much better translation, which my fansubs have is "Rem...", "Is that a name I should know?". This wording matches up much better, since the surprise is at the end. Even something like "Rem...", "Who is that?" feels just as natural and maintains the proper ordering. It's just such a shame the translator fucked it up, because it gives an extra 2 or 3 seconds for the viewer to think about it, before it's represented on screen.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. I'd rather hear more of your thoughts then less of them. It's also alot easier to suggest something like suicide since we the viewer are aware that Subaru is in a story (and nothing happens to us he kills himself and it turns out that he doesn't come back (though it's pretty easy to meta analysis this, again something Subaru doesn't have the luxury of doing)). If you had been saying that Subaru should of killed himself for something minor (which some people really like suggesting), then I think it would be different, but you haven't so I don't think it's a big deal.

Yeah I myself even bring up the suicide thing not being an easy choice sometime later, maybe next episode? Sometimes it just requires me to think it through some more to realize these things again haha. Too easy to just blurt out thoughts in the moment while reacting

Well there is a "kinda" semi-reason to doubt Roswaal at this point. Think about it, everyone was expecting the witch cult to target Emilia (even another candidate said it), so where was Roswaal ? He wasn't there protecting her, though it doesn't mean he's guilty of anything I'm just pointing the facts so far. Regarding the 7 deadly sins, as I said in another comment once it's a popular theme in fictions, includings animes. That's why it's also in FMA. As for Subaru, it's important to remember that dying is a very traumatizing experience for him. He's not even sure he'll always come back. That's why comitting suicide isn't an easy thing for him.
