Wild arms is a famous rpg series, the 4th and 5th episodes were on PS2 and since then remakes and small titles still kinda released. So you probably heard of it. Afaik, the first episode on PS1 was the best/most popular, but I never played it.

And yeah, Middle School is before High School. Which would make Onizuka's students in class 3-4 only 14 years old, too young for his... interests. Hence his disappointment during the opening ceremony!
