This was never confirmed in the manga (or anime), but it was always my theory/thought that Reiner might have killed that guy and made it look like a suicide so he, Annie and Bertholdt could steal his story of where they were the day Wall Maria fell. Reiner and Eren's relationship is so complex and so brilliantly written/portrayed. Definitely one of my favourite relationships to watch twist and transform.
