Attack on Titan 1x11 Definitive Reaction "Icon"

A slight change of scenery, as I always thought the background in my videos seemed way too dark. Let me know if you like how it looks! As far as the episode goes, it was great revisiting some classic scenes. Eren telling Hannes to focus on the mission will never not be absolutely hilarious. Thank you all for the great input given too on recent episodes, some of which I discusss in the intro!

Regarding Eren knowing about the the self-inflicted injury condition in order to transform, in episode 9 Eren remembers Grisha telling him that "their memories will tell you how to use it" as he is getting him "vaccinated." Immediately after that Eren bites himself and transforms into a Titan. Later (in episode 19 I think) Eren explains to Levi's squad that he needs a self-inflicted injury in order to transform, but then immediately realizes that he doesn't really know why he knows this.

Regarding Eren hitting Mikasa, I think that at this very early stage, when Eren didn't have much control over his titan form yet, Eren relied a lot on the self-inflicted injury plus goal in mind to be able to transform and then function as a titan. So when he becomes a titan he performs the action that he has in mind and then goes back to his human form almost immediately. (As we can see in the incident with the teaspoon.) In this case, even though Eren's original mission was to lift the boulder, what was really on his mind at that moment was to get Mikasa away, and we can see him arguing with her right before he transforms. This is why I think he punched her as soon as he transformed, he was trying to get her away from him.

That wouldn't explain why he told Zeke to stop Eren just hours earlier.

I think the reason Grisha gave Eren the powers even though he knew the consequences was because he was already in too deep with this responsibility that Krueger gave him like how Eren told Grisha during the fight to get the founding titan. If he stopped at that part then he would be letting down his sister, Krueger and every Eldian.

Oh Robin, one last note on this episode - you asked how Eren knew to injure himself to transform. It's more than that. He knew to bite his hand, something we've pretty much only seen Frieda do (Reiner also did it in season 4 when protecting Falco, but probably only bc he didn't have a sharp object available). When Grisha gives Eren the Founding titan power, he tells Eren, "their memories" will teach Eren how to use that power. "Their memories" refers to his titan predecessors, including Frieda. So he's likely tapping into Frieda's memories, which tell him that he can bite himself to access that power.

I've never thought of it this way, thanks for making me understand eren more.

I'm usually not one to make any excuses for final season Eren, but the one exception is stuff like this. Rico does it here, but Armin, Levi, and Jean have done it throughout the first 3 seasons - they talk Eren's ear off and get in his face about how everything and everyone is relying on him. They literally put the weight of the world on his shoulders. He was basically groomed into believing he is responsible for the fate of humanity. Sure, it motivated him in the moment, but the long term cost is that he thinks he has the right to make drastic decisions for the entire world. It's his duty, right? Everytime I rewatch the series and Jean or Armin tells Eren how much is riding on him or how he needs to 'give up his humanity', I'm like, 'STOP, you have NO idea the monster you're helping to create'. Eren is of course responsible for his own actions, but his comrades don't get a free pass either.

Ohhhh now it all makes sense! Yeah okay see I knew it had to make sense already, but not getting this explained in the comments for ep9 made me doubt it. But yeah I get it now thanks!

At the time when Grisha told Zeke to stop Eren, he wasn't aware about the full consequences from Marleys attack on the wall. He self asked "Why aren't you showing me everything Eren? The Day it happens, if Carla is safe?" In the Episode "Bystander" Keith informs him that Carla died. Thats where you can see Grishas demeanor changing. He was devasteded. This was probably Grishas turning point, where he understood Erens actions or at least thought this is the only way.

Oh you're right my bad! Just something I wasn't thinking through in the moment

Just a timeline refresher, as I'm not sure what you meant exactly, but Grisha gave kid Eren the Founding titan like, the next day after telling Paths Zeke to stop adult Eren. It wasn't years, but more like hours.
