You are not pay attention on last episode, that glasses present already had a scene there, i think you are talk to much while watching, so didn't pay attention to the show, little detail somehow is important.

He didnt want the kids to be scared and used his lying habit to make them believe it. He knew the pirates were coming and he wanted to shoulder the responsibility himself.
